    WILLIAM FREDERICKSEN Two works on paper. Untitled, pen and ink and watercolor on thin wove paper, 1946. 215x180 mm; 8 1/2x7 inches. Signed and dated in pen and ink, lower left recto * Untitled, crayon and wax resist with charcoal on wove paper, 1999. 434x297 mm; 17 1/8x11 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, verso. Provenance (both): Private collection, Connecticut. Born in Norway, Fredericksen (1914-2010) came to Chicago in 1946 to study at the New Bauhaus (Institute of Design) under László Moholy-Nagy and Alexander Archipenko. In 1947 he was invited to exhibit at the Annual Exhibition of Artists of Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1948, after more than two years at the Bauhaus, he left to pursue a successful career in commercial graphic design while continuing to pursue painting and drawing. He exhibited throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, where he moved in the late 1950s, as well as at the André Emmerich Gallery in New York.

Modern painting measures 13.75 inches high, 16.3 inches wide. Labeled Heydenryk Frame measures 18.75 inches high, 24.75 inches wide. In good condition. From Askart.com: Born in Norway in 1914, William Fredericksen, artist, craftsman, antique collector and connoisseur, was creative with a number of styles. He is most known for his bright and bold geometric abstracts, figurative crayon compositions and assemblage works. He studied art at the American Academy of Art and the Art Institute (Chicago) and the Institute of Design. At the Art Institute, Fredericksen was under the tutelage of esteemed Bauhaus masters Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Alexander Archipenko. Fredericksen developed fascinating and detailed collages representing authentic pieces and things such as old sailing ships, bridges, Asian street scenes and diverse designs of white on white and colored collages. Mr. Fredericksen has had several one man shows at Emmerich Gallery, N.Y., the Silvermine Annuals and the Jasper Rand Gallery.

Provenance: From a collection of the artist's works purchased at an antique market in Brimfield, MA. About the artist: William Fredericksen, (American 1914-2010), was born in Norway in and studied fine art there as a young man. In the 1940s, with war raging in Europe, Fredericksen immigrated to the United States where he settled in Chicago, a place where several important Bauhaus trained artists had chosen to continue their careers. Fredericksen studied at the American Academy of Art, the Art Institute, (Chicago), and the New Bauhaus, (later the Institute of Design), working directly under esteemed Bauhaus masters Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Archipenko, Gyorgy Kepes and Werner Drewes.In 1948 Fredericksen left the New Bauhaus to enjoy a successful career as a commercial graphic designer, creating advertising for major American companies.In 1958 Fredericksen moved to Massachusetts where he remained until his death in 2010.
