Charles - Théodore FRERE (Paris 1814 - 1888) Bedouin halt Original oil on canvas 40 x 65 cm Signed lower left TH FRERE A student of the portraitist Jules Cogniet, then of the landscape painter Camille Roqueplan at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Charles-Théodore Frère exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1834. After presenting his Orientalist canvases, he embarked on a long journey that took him to Malta, Greece and the Middle East. He settled in Algiers in 1836, then in Constantine from 1837 to 1839, where he was prolific in painting architecture, bazaar views, mosques, Moorish cafés, desert caravans and landscapes. He is one of the few French artists to have painted Jerusalem, Beirut, Palmyra and Damascus. From 1839 (two "Views of Algiers") to 1850, he exhibited regularly at the Salon. His many works, often dazzling with light, are testimony to his years spent in the Orient: "Vue de la mosquée Sidi Abd-Er-Raham", "Vue du faubourg Bab-Azoun", "Jardins à l'intérieur de la Casbah d'Alger", "Plaine de la Mitidja". In 1853, he set up a studio in Cairo and became a court painter. The viceroy of Egypt elevated him to the rank of bey. The artist was subsequently promoted to Officer of the Order of the Medjidié of the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Frère accompanied Empress Eugénie to the inauguration of the Suez Canal, along with other Orientalist painters such as Narcisse Berchère, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Fromentin and Tournemine. He took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1855, 1867 and 1878, and was commissioned by the French government to paint "Les Monts Felfela" (Constantine). He continued to send works to the Salon until 1887. Many were painted on small wooden panels and reveal, as Théophile Gautier wrote, Frère's long familiarity with these countries of "gold, silver and azure".

Blick vom Ufer über das Wasser auf die Insel mit dem großen Tempelkomplex, in dessen Zentrum der Tempel der Göttin Isis steht. Rechtsseitig davon weitere kleinere Bauwerke, links ragen mehrere große Palmen in den hellblauen, teils vom Licht der untergehenden Sonne gelblich verfärbten Himmel. Im ruhigen, die Insel umgebenden Wasser spiegeln sich die Tempelanlagen harmonisch wieder. Im Vordergrund, am Ufer, drei sitzende Frauen in langen blauen Gewändern sowie eine stehende Frau, in ihrer rechten erhobenen Hand eine Vase tragend. Zudem sind am Ufer einige antike Ruinenstücke zu erkennen. Prachtvolle stimmungsvolle Malerei in teils diesigem Licht, die Ruhe und Würde ausstrahlt. Minimale Retuschen. 1869 begleitete der Künstler Kaiserin Eugenie, die Ehefrau Napoleons III, bei ihrer Fahrt auf dem Nil und führte in ihrem Auftrag zahlreiche Aquarelle der dortigen Gegenden aus, ehe er sich in Kairo niederließ. DIE KOLOSSE VON MEMNON Öl auf Holz. 31 x 51,5 cm. Links unten signiert „Th. Frère“ und beschriftet „Colossus de Memnon, Thebes“. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Die beiden nebeneinanderstehenden altägyptischen Kolossalstatuen aus dem 14. Jh. v. Chr. im Mittelpunkt des Gemäldes. Sie befinden sich im weiten Niltal, in dem auch einige Beduinen ihre Zelte aufgeschlagen haben. Im Vordergrund sieht man zudem ein sitzendes Dromedar und rechts zwei weitere. Im Hintergrund der weite ansteigende Gebirgszug und weitere Tempelanlage mit einer kleinen Karawane. Die von nicht sichtbarer Stelle links einfallende Sonne wirft nur einen leichten Schatten. Das Bild strahlt Ruhe aus, die fast monochrom beigetonige Farbgebung verleiht den beiden Kolossen, die in einen durchgehend blauen Himmel ragen, Würde und besondere Aufmerksamkeit.
