Sight: 6 3/4" H x 11 5/8" W. Framed: 9 7/8" H x 14 7/8" D. Artist biography (from the Columbus Museum of Art, Georgia): "William Charles Anthony Frerichs was born in the Netherlands. He studied art in The Hague as a child where he entered the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten at the age of six, under the tutelage of landscape painters Andreas Schelfhout and Bartholomeus J. van Hove, who were both important figures in Dutch art in the mid-nineteenth century. Schelfhout had a particular interest in light and in the reflective qualities of snow and water, a concern that was to have a lasting effect on the art of his pupil. In 1850, Frerichs immigrated to America and settled in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. Little is known of his early years in New York except that he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1852, and he was elected a member of the New York Sketch Club in 1852. In late 1854, he had accepted a teaching position as Professor of Drawing, Painting, and French at the Greensboro Female College (now known as Greensboro College). He arrived in North Carolina in early 1855. During these years, Frerichs often rambled the Blue Ridge, the Great Smokies, and the Appalachians, collecting material in the form of sketches from which he would draw inspiration for full-size canvases during the rest of his career. He was one of the first painters to venture into western North Carolina, which in the 1850s was still quite untamed. After the conclusion of the Civil War Frerichs decided to return to the northeast, where he lived in the New York-New Jersey area for the rest of his life."

William Charles Anthony Frerichs (Belgian/American/North Carolina, 1829-1905) oil on canvas winter scene painting depicting figures ice skating and sledding on a frozen lake and fishing boats banked on the shore, all surrounded by a snow-covered ground with barren trees and evergreen foliage under a cloudy sky. When he was 18 years old, he completed a 12 x 17-foot painting that was purchased for the emperor of Russia. He was well-traveled and enhanced his art training with independent study in Paris, Rome, and Vienna. Frerichs emigrated to New York in 1850 and exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1854. He relocated with his family to Greensboro, North Carolina where he worked and taught art from 1854 to 1863. During this period, he painted numerous wilderness landscapes in the region. In 1863, after a fire destroyed most of his work and employment was scarce in the South following the Civil War, Frerichs returned to New York. In 1869 he moved to Tottenville, Staten Island, and later to Newark, New Jersey where he operated an art school until his death in 1905.

      Est: $1,000 - $3,000

Attributed William Charles Anthony Frerichs (Dutch/American, 1829-1905), Winter Scene with Skaters oil on canvas (lining), unsigned, presented in a later frame. Stretcher size 20 x 26 in.; Frame dimensions 25 x 30 3/4 in. Born in the Netherlands, William Charles Anthony Frerichs studied art at the Royal Academy in The Hague and Brussels Academy. In 1850 he left Europe and immigrated to the United States, first settling in New York City. Four years later, he accepted a position as professor of arts and languages at Greensboro Female College (now Greensboro College) and moved to North Carolina. The rolling landscape of the North Carolina Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains provided great inspiration to Frerichs. He trekked through the wilderness to capture swiftly flowing rivers and dramatic landscapes. In 1863, a fire at the college consumed his collection of paintings and sketches. After additional set-backs and the start of the Civil War, Frerichs and his family left North Carolina and returned to New York. From 1865-1869, he maintained a studio in Manhattan, living at one point on Staten Island where he was neighbors with Jasper Cropsey. He continued to paint romantic idealized landscapes in the manner of his Dutch training. The castle depicted in this painting is near identical to one depicted in a winter skating scene signed by Frerichs and offered at Christie's Fine American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, September 12, 2006, lot 20, sale 1699. Sight size 29.25 x 44.25 in.; Frame dimensions 37.5 x 52 in. Born in the Netherlands, William Frerichs studied art and medicine in the Hague and Leyden. Deems, a Methodist minister and president of Greensboro Female College (now Greensboro College). Frerichs soon accepted a teaching position at the college and moved to North Carolina. Frerichs was awed by the Appalachian and Sauratown mountains of North Carolina. When not teaching, he would hike into the wilderness with his paints and brushes to capture the landscapes on canvas. Unfortunately, many of his paintings from this period were destroyed in a fire that swept through his studio at the college in 1863. Following this setback, Frerichs and his family found their way back up to New York, settling in Staten Island. From the Collection of James H. Craig and Randy S. In 1852 he exhibited at the National Academy of Design and was elected to the New York Sketch Club, thus affiliating himself with the Hudson River School of landscape painting. By 1855, he had accepted a teaching position at Greensboro College in North Carolina. He arrived in North Carolina in early 1855. During these years, Frerichs often rambled the Blue Ridge, the Great Smokies, and the Appalachians, collecting material in the form of sketches from which he would draw inspiration for full-size canvases the rest of his career. He was one of the first painters to venture into western North Carolina, which in the 1850s was still quite untamed. After the conclusion of the Civil War Frerichs decided to return to the northeast, where he lived in the New York / New Jersey area for the rest of his life.He settled on Staten Island in 1868. Frerichs painted extensively in these last years of his career in New England. In 1900, his health failing, Frerichs went to live with his eldest son in Tottenville. He died on March 16, 1905.. He returned to New York in 1865 and spent the rest of his life in New Jersey and on Staten Island, where he died in 1905.
