PADHI FRIEBERGER (1931–2016) | Untitled, from the series 'Huik's Caps', Vienna c. 1965 Image Size: 29,6 x 26,7 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1980s on matte double-weight paper 36,8 x 27 cm, in very good condition. Padhi Frieberger used pictorial-sculptural as well as performative and linguistic means for his art, often using everyday objects, newspaper clippings and other found objects. In the medium of photography, he combined his interests in elaborate stagings and created an extensive body of work that has not yet been sufficiently researched. This photograph is from a series he took near his Vienna studio on Simmeringer Hauptstraße. The models were his nephew Jawo, who wears a chain of apples around his neck, and his partner Ingeborg Schneider, whom Frieberger called "Huik". She sewed countless caps for him, which became his trademark.

PADHI FRIEBERGER (1931–2016) | Untitled, Weinviertel, Austria c. 1965 Image Size: 31 x 30 cm English: Vintage silver print on double-weight matte paper 34,9 x 30 cm, in very good condition. Signed by the artist in black felt-tip pen and numbered "111" in blue ink on the reverse. Known for his object art, performative sessions and postcard collages, Padhi Frieberger also pursued his artistic interests in numerous photographic stagings with children. These were increasingly created from 1964 onwards, when Padhi's sister and her son Walter – "Jawo" – stayed with the artist at Haggenberg Castle for some time. In this photograph, Jawo with a self-made wind instrument can be seen behind a seated man. The setting combines planned staging and composition with the aesthetics of a snapshot (note the scene in the picture axis with the boy turning upwards to the woman at the window, while below a dog's profile protrudes into the frame).

In his photographic works, the avant-garde artist Padhi Frieberger created poetic pictorial spaces that connect, contextualise and convey his exuberant aesthetic concerns. Thus he included his object artworks or friends in his arrangements, whereby the photographs function as artistic articulation and at the same time as a reflection of their authentic origins. In the 1980s he staged his art objects in the Lower Austrian landscape in and around Fischapark, a former textile factory in Weigelsdorf.

In the mid-1990s, musician Oliver Ertl made himself available as a contributor to one of Padhi Frieberger’s photo sessions at the Alpenmilchzentrale on Vienna’s Weyringergasse. From a series with colour pigments comes the photograph of the latter's hands protruding from the round opening in a concrete wall of the building complex. They can be read as a sign of the artistic creative process, as well as an independent biomorphic structure that allows for various associations.

Padhi Frieberger * (Wien 1929 geb.) ...
