"When asked what he finds most inspiring about painting, French artist Bernard Frize once replied: ‘There are many different ways to create a painting. [...] For example, I can decide whether I paint like I spread butter on my breakfast rolls or like I put flowers in a vase. That's how it is when I paint with 15 brushes in my hand. It's the same. Every flower has a different colour – and on my brush there are colours that I don't even really know" (Bernard Frize, interview with Amine Haase, Kunstforum: Kunst ohne Werk. Ästhetik ohne Absicht, vol. 152, 2000) ’Mona’ is one of four large-format works – and the first to appear on the auction market – that were created especially for Frize's 1993 solo exhibition in Zurich. All bear the names of Paris metro trains: Rom, Vony, Vick, and Mona. An emulsion of dispersion coating, resin, and ink in candy-pink monochrome stretches across the resin base of the painting in broad brushstrokes. The horizontal, thin veils of colour, made transparent by the addition of resin, begin to take on a life of their own when the base is turned upside down with a simple gesture. The ink coagulates in light-focused zones and the colours separate, flow, run and drip, passing through forms in which brushstrokes are no longer interrupted, but run around the canvas as if they were the canvas itself. An ambivalent, hallucinatory, momentary, almost scenic phantasm spreads before our eyes and yet it is only abstract material. A breathing field that works from within itself. A vegetative organism and artistic product at the same time. ‘It's quite complex to create situations in which you do nothing and things happen by themselves.’ This deliberately paradoxical statement by the French artist naturally refers specifically to the activity (or non-activity) of abstract painting, which has its own very seductive spell, approachable and yet distant at the same time. Frize has interrogated the status of painting for over forty years. In his extremely lively works, which usually develop in series, neither the expression of the materials nor the subjective hand of the artist are in the foreground. Instead, he continuously subjects his art to new techniques, experiments with materials and tools, and thus explores an industrial and mechanical approach to art production. The subjective artistic process takes a back seat, and Frize puts himself in the position of the observer, allowing his painting to become an act of self-determined action and emergence. Nothing is more idiosyncratic than such refreshing, yet so elegantly controlled, inventiveness.
