GEORGE ALBERT FROST (American, 1843-1907) Spring Landscape Oil on canvas 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm) Signed lower left: G. A. Frost THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST This colorful, artfully composed landscape is the work of Boston-born artist George Albert Frost who had a fascinating career as a survey and sketch artist in addition to his work as an easel painter. When he was in his mid-30s, Frost produced sketches as a member of Colonel Pope's division of the Western Union surveying party to British Columbia. In 1866, he was assigned to Asia for the same purpose. Following studies in Germany from 1874 to 1876, he maintained a painting studio for ten years in North Cambridge, Massachusetts and, lived part time in San Francisco between 1872 and 1889. In 1874, he exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association. In 1885 he had another exotic assignment: he accompanied George Kennan to Siberia to record the life of Russian exiles. For many years, Frost had a summer home in Brownfield, Maine, near the Conway area of New Hampshire, and painted many scenes along the Saco.
