William Edward Frost Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1810 - d. 1877

William Edward Frost (September 1810 – 4 June 1877) was an English painter of the Victorian era. Virtually alone among English artists in the middle Victorian period, he devoted his practice to the portrayal of the female nude.

Frost was educated in the schools of the Royal Academy, beginning in 1829; he established a reputation as a portrait painter before branching into historical and mythological subjects, including the subgenre of fairy painting that was characteristic of Victorian art. In 1839 he won the Royal Academy's gold medal for his Prometheus Bound, and in 1843 he won a prize in the Westminster Hall competition for his Una Alarmed by Fauns (a subject from Spenser's The Faerie Queene). He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1846, and a full member in 1870.

Frost is widely recognized as a follower of William Etty, who preceded him as the primary British painter of nudes in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Despite the prudishness of the Victorian era, Frost's relatively chaste nudes were popular, and his career was financially successful.

Attributed to William Edward Frost, RA,  British 1810-1877-  Venus in a wo

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Attributed to William Edward Frost, RA,  British 1810-1877-  Venus in a woodland glade, with an infant faun and an attendant;  oil on canvas, 71 x 98.5 cm.  Provenance:  With E. Stacy-Marks, (as 'William Etty RA', according to an old label on the reverse)  Private Collection.  Note:  William Edward Frost first trained at the Royal Academy Schools, starting out as a portrait painter before devoting his practice almost entirely to depicting the female nude. In this approach he followed closely in the footsteps of his slightly older contemporary William Etty (1787-1849), whose works appear to have had a significant influence on Frost's artistic practice.  The painting presented here, like many of Frost's works, appears to position the women in a loosely mythological setting, surrounded by classical attributes. The subject has allowed the artist to show off his fine brushwork, particularly in the porcelain-like rendition of the women's skin, and the glint of the precious objects that lie scattered on the forest floor. The marble-like, almost sculpturally modelled figures are strongly reminiscent of those in Frost's 'Three Graces' in the collection of the Yale Centre for British Art (B1998.24.3), as well as his painting of 'Sabrina', exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1871 and later recorded at Sotheby's, 14 July 1983, lot 149.  The central figure of Venus, depicted with her arm raised in the air, also recalls the figure of Venus in Frost's 'Venus disarming Cupid', which was sold at Christie's, 20 February 2003, lot 171 (£32,000).  We are grateful to Richard Green of York University for suggesting the attribution to Frost on the basis of photographs.

William Edward Frost, RA, British 1810-1877- Ariadne; Terpsichore; and Melpomene; oils on panel, two with arched top, each 13 x 8.5 cm., three (3). Provenance: With R. Dolman & Son, London [no.45510]. Note: A pupil of William Etty, RA (1787-1849), Frost is thought to have been his only follower. Through this association he was also one of the few British artists of the mid-late 19th Century to have explored the subject of the nude in his paintings. The changing tastes and increasingly austere attitudes in the Victorian period meant that nudity wasn't largely well received, and Frost's more chaste compositions were generally more sought after. His later career explored themes around mythology and indeed Terpsichore (the protector of dance) and Melpomene (the protector of Tragedy) were two of the nine muses in Greek mythology, whilst Ariadne was a Greek Princess, mostly associated with mazes and labyrinths because of her involvement in the myths of the Minotaur and Theseus. William Edward Frost RA (1810-1877) William Edward Frost RA (1810-1877) Leda and the Swan oil on panel, oval 55 x 39cm William Edward Frost was educated at the Royal Academy schools. He initially specialised in portraiture and went on to explore mythological subjects and fairy painting. Unusually for a Victorian artist, he also devoted much time to the female nude, and was said to have been a follower of William Etty RA (1787-1849). Frost's tasteful nudes were fortunately well received by Victorian society, who were charmed by his gentle and demure paintings. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1870.
