Carl Fudge Sold at Auction Prices

Carl Fudge uses digital technology as an intermediary step, exploiting the computer's facility for subtle control of composition and color before returning to more traditional media to create the final work. His recent suite of prints, "Rhapsody Spray," is based on the image of Sailor Chibi Moon, a Japanese anime character endowed with shape-shifting, transformative powers. Fudge digitally reworked every inch of a scanned image of Chibi Moon into a nearly abstract composition that was then used as the model for a meticulously executed screenprint, produced in four chromatic variations.

Biography:

Born in London, England, Carl Fudge has lived in New York City for ten years. His work involves the intersection of the oldest and the newest printmaking technologies. Many of Fudge's prints are complex digital reworkings of Japanese 17th century woodcuts and contemporary popular images. Carl Fudge teaches at Columbia University.

        CARL FUDGE HARPSICHORD, Two-Manual, Opus 21, 1974 with Chinoisserie paint decorated case by Sheridan Germann marked and dated Carl Fudge Fecit, 1974; height: 36 in.; length: 90 in.; width: 37 in. Other Notes: Sold to benefit the funds for the acquisition of paintings and sculpture at the Boston Athen?um This instrument was made for the musician Carl Fudge for the musician Ariel W. P. Hall. Fudge was a master craftsman of fine reproductions of historical keyboard instruments such as clavichords, virginals, and harpsichords. His shop was in Winchester, Massachusetts. According to Fudge's own description of the instrument, the Athen?um's harpsichord is a slightly enlarged copy of one made in the 1620s by Jan Ruckers II and that, as of 1988, was in the collection of Yale University Art Gallery. The Athen?um's copy is predominantly black and red with gold-leafed bands and moldings. It has a French polish finish and a French stand with gold-leafed carved legs. The case decorations are by Sheridan Germann, Boston, and are copied after those on a harpsichord in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Ariel Hall (1906-1989), for whom this instrument was made and who gave it to the Athen?um, was a renowned concert harpist. She was married to Frederick Garrison Hall Jr., whose father, Frederick Sr. (1879-1946), was an artist. (The Athen?um owns one of Frederick Hall Sr.'s paintings: The Cello Player, 1913). Ariel Hall herself was an amateur painter; the Athen?um owns her portrait of the American actress Eva Le Gallienne (1951).
