Fuertes was an American ornithological artist, perhaps the best since Audubon. His personal bank check drawn on the Ithaca Trust Company, filled in and signed by him in full to Waldo C. Moore for one cent. Fine, with a small original sketch of a meadowlark or thrush sitting on a fencepost singing. A wonderful example of his work. Waldo Moore was an active autograph collector of the 1920’s who would send celebrities a one cent check of his and ask the person to send one of theirs in return.

        Fuertes Original Watercolor, Dalmatian

        Est: $5,000 - $7,000

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (American, 1874-1927). "Dalmatian, or Coach Dog". Watercolor and gouache on board. Original watercolor prepared for The Book of Dogs: An Intimate Study of Mankind's Best Friend. Washington, DC: National Geographic Society, 1919. 7 7/8" x 13" board. Fuertes described several dog breeds within the context of their former categorization. Writing here, "The Dalmatian was originally a "pointer" and in his native country was used for sporting purposes. But in England he was found to be very inferior to the native pointer, and, as he showed a marked fondness for horses and stables, he was specially trained as a "coach" or "carriage" dog. For more than a hundred years before the day of the automobile, it was a common thing on English roads to see one of these muscular, deep-lunged, spotted dogs trotting easily between the hind wheels of a fashionable turnoutso close, in fact, that it had the appearance of weaving in and out as the horses heels flew back. The automobile has virtually done away with it as a vehicle guardian and companion; still its unusual appearance has been sufficient to maintain it among the fancy and a goodly number find their way to the big shows. The coach dog strongly resembles a small, straight-legged pointer in general conformation, and differs chiefly in the shorter ear, straight front, and less arched stifle. In color it must be white, evenly spangled all over with round, clearly defined spots of black or dark brown. Black is preferable and more usual. These spots must be sharp, and the more even and uniformly distributed the better. They may be confluent on the ears "it is a virtue to have dark ears" but elsewhere on the body it is a fault. In size they should be from half an inch to an inch in diameter, roughly. The legs should be strong and straight, of good bone, for speed and endurance. The feet should not be large, but compact, and with toes well arched and pads deep and elastic. The coach dog should be from 19 to 23 inches high and weigh from 35 to 50 pounds."

        Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Signed along the lower center; with an inscription along the lower right. Further inscribed along the lower left and dated May 1, 1899. Provenance information inscribed along the verso. Provenance: Directly from the artist to Prof. Chas Babcock; gift to Prof. Frederick M. Smith; gift to Ann B. Sampson; Private Collection, Minnesota. Lot Essay: Louis Agassiz Fuertes was an ornithologist, illustrator, and artist and is considered one of the most prolific American bird artists, second only to John James Audubon. Born and raised in New York, he fostered a fascination with birds from a young age. At the age of 17 he became the youngest member ever named when he was inducted as an Associate Member of the American Ornithologists' Union. After studing at the Institute of Keller in Zurich for a year he returned to America to study architecture at Cornell University. However, he lacked a passion for the study of mathematics and geometry and was still fascinated by birds. One apocryphal story tells of him climbing out a window during a college lecture to sit in a tree, completey still, to study a strange bird call. Finally, in 1895, he exhibited fifty of his works at the congress of the American Ornitholgists' Union at Washington and received the first of many commisions for illustrating birds before he graduated. After graduating he studied with Abbott H. Thayer and traveled throughout the United States to study birds. He collaborated with Frank Chapman, the curator of the American Museum of Natural History, on many assignments and even discovered a new species of oriiole with him while in Mexico. His fame led to him returning to Cornell University to lecture on ornithology beginning in 1923. He was killed prematurely by an a train at a crossing near his hometown of Unadilla, New York, when the train was obscured by a load of hay. The paintings in his car extraordinarily survived undamaged.

FUERTES WATERCOLOR OF A FRIGATE BIRD

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

FUERTES, Louis Agassiz (American, 1874-1927). Frigate Bird. Watercolor and pencil on paper. Signed lower right: "Louis Agassiz Fuertes" 30" x 21 3/4" sheet. Louis Agassiz Fuertes was the most widely acclaimed American ornithological artist of his time. Born in Ithaca, New York, Fuertes began drawing birds at an early age, inspired by Audubon’s Birds of America. By the time he was seventeen, his illustrations had qualified him as an associate member of the American Ornithologists’ Union. Fuertes quickly became associated with leading ornithological scientists and artists, and he received professional commissions while still an undergraduate at Cornell. Fuertes went on to produce a vast body of work for an extensive range of projects. His paintings and drawings invariably convey the artist’s meticulous study of his subjects’ form and behavior. His diligence, precision, and skill in draftsmanship produced some of the most animated and engaging bird illustrations of the twentieth century. Fuertes was determined to study and draw birds as they behaved in their natural habitats, unlike his predecessors, including Audubon, who took the easier route of drawing from stuffed specimens. As a result of this scrupulous and sensitive study of living birds, Fuertes’ works are characterized by much greater accuracy and a sense of vitality. Perhaps more than any of the other great bird artists, Fuertes’ birds are always full of life. In the book “A Celebration of Birds: The Life and Art of Louis Agassiz Fuertes,” the noted specialist on ornithological art Roger Tory Peterson notes that even today, “most bird painters are still influenced directly or indirectly by Fuertes...” Fuertes traveled widely to broaden his knowledge of birds and their habitats. In 1899, for example, he accompanied the Harriman Expedition to Alaska, a group that traveled up the coast as far as Plover Bay in Siberia. Sponsored by the railroad and mining magnate Edward Harriman, the elaborately outfitted expedition included well-known scientists such as John Burroughs and John Muir, landscape artists Frederick Dellenbaugh and Robert Swain Gifford, and photographer Edward Curtis. By that time, Fuertes has widely acclaimed himself, his illustrations have been disseminated in several publications. Yet his original watercolors, the most compelling testaments to this great bird artist’s unparalleled abilities, are quite rare.
