Depicting a day in a fishing village, this scene features docked boats and vessels — that the catch of the day has already been done, and now is a period of rest. Seeing as the painting is bright, one can assume that it is noon, with the sun bearing down, and that the villagers are resting in their own homes. Though he stopped painting many years before his death at the age of 95, he was relatively fit because of his Daiji practices. Dubbed the ‘Cezanne of the Melati Flats’, he was a member of the Selangor Art Society and won several prizes notably the 2nd Prize in the Merdeka Independence Trade Fair’s Art and Photography exhibition in 1957. In 1999, Fung Yow Chork was already 81 and it was moot if he could climb lofty mountains, and so this work with an unusual topography of sharp peaks is probably from imagination or a composite culled from others of his favourite haunts from around Melawati, Gasing, Saga/Apeh, Broga, Tagar, Jugra, Monkey Hills, Gunung Kutu (Kuala Kubu Baru), the Tabor quartz hills and even Cameron Highlands. Though he stopped painting many years before his death at the age of 95, he was relatively fit because of his Daiji practices. Dubbed the ‘Cezanne of the Melati Flats’, he was a member of the Selangor Art Society and won several prizes notably the 2nd Prize in the Merdeka Independence Trade Fair’s Art and Photography exhibition in 1957. Self-taught artist Fung Yow Chork is noted for his plein air paintings of fishing villages, river scenes and rural life mainly in the Klang Valley and Malacca. During his free time, he would go on painting excursions, usually with a few friends like Wong Jong Nong and Peter Liew, and here, he captured a treacherous section then on the road up to Genting Highlands. He was a co-founding member of the Thursday Art Group and the Selangor Art Society (1954), and switched to oils on the advice of Zhong Baimu who was teaching at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore. He migrated from Guangdong, China, to Singapore in 1933 and moved to Kuala Lumpur. He worked as a salesman, a shop assistant, and a typesetter for a Chiense newspaper before retiring in 1977. He held his first solo at the Chin Woo Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in 1981, the Australian High Commission in 1982, the Rupa Gallery, KL in 1983, and The Art Gallery, Penang, in 1998. He won 2nd Prize in the Merdeka Independence Trade Fair art and photography exhibition.

This piece depicts St. Paul’s Church, a historic building in Malacca that was originally built in 1521, making it the oldest church in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Located at the summit of St. Paul’s Hill, it is today part of the Malacca Museum Complex, comprising of the A Famosa ruins, the Stadthuys and other historical buildings. Fung Yow Chork captured the ruined walls of the church with his trademark Impressionist style, swiftly applying paint to depict light and contrast. Fung Yow Chork was only 13 years old when he picked up the finer points in art from an artist in China who had studied Impressionism in Japan. In 1933, his family migrated to Singapore and there, he forged a friendship with Professor Zhong Bai-mu (Chong Pai Mu), a lecturer of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. After moving to Kuala Lumpur in 1934, he worked as a salesman, shop assistant and typesetter with a Chinese newspaper, painting only on Sundays and during holidays and more so after he retired in 1977. He held his first solo exhibition at Chin Woo Art Gallery in 1981. Illustrated here is an alluring scene at an unknown port jetty on wooden stilts, perhaps at Pulau Ketam, a small island located off the coast of Klang known for long wooden stilts dwellings suspended between one and ten meters above sea level. Fung Yow Chork has skilfully captured a busy jetty depot filled with crates, and boats moored at the dockside and two figures seen on the wooden planks. His use of vibrant palette - consisting of light blue for the sky, ochre for the crates, shades of brown for the wooden stilt depot and bright red and murky green for the boats with hints of red and green across the picture plane - create a picturesque view of an otherwise monotonous setting, a testament to his artistic flair. During his lifetime, he artist would go on alfresco painting excursions with his artist friends, favouring the out-of-the way places of disused tin mines, barren open land, and fringe of forested areas - generally any landscapes with a painterly view and all the prerequisite elements of light, contrast, colour, character and peculiarities. In 1957, he won a prize in the Merdeka Independence Trade Fair Art and Photographic exhibition. He held his first solo exhibition at Chin Woo Art Gallery in 1981. In an interview published in The New Straits Times in 1981, he described landscape to Halinah Todd: "The landscape thinks itself in me and I am its consciousness." The news of the demise of the great outdoor painter Fung Yow Chork late last year brought grief to the local art scene. Fung Yow Chork would go on alfresco painting excursions with his artist friends, favouring the out-of-the way places of disused tin mines, barren open land, fringe of forested areas - generally any landscapes with a painterly view and all the prerequisite elements of light, contrast, colour, character and peculiarities.
