      Charles Furneaux American (Hawaii), 1835-1913 Site of Alexander Young Hotel, 1887 Oil on board Signed and dated lower left. A couple seated on a bench beneath a blooming monkeypod tree on a shady path leading to a residence with a small porch. In 1847, two monkeypod seeds were brought to Hawaii from Mexico. One was planted in Koloa, and the second planted in Honolulu. The latter was removed when construction of the Alexander Young Hotel began. At the time of its construction in 1900, the Alexander Young Hotel was the largest edifice in Honolulu and the foremost hotel in the Pacific. Label to verso from Davis Galleries of Honolulu, Hawaii. Insurance appraisal performed February 6, 2010, by International Valuation Consultation, Ltd., Honolulu, Hawaii.

      Charles Furneaux (American, 1835-1913), The Hancock House, Beacon Street, Boston, o/c, 12" x 18", signed LL. "The Hancock House was considered one of the finest Georgian homes in Boston in its day", "John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence and our first Governor lived here", "on the sidewalk on Beacon St... Hancock House memorial plaque, located on the far west gate" (taken from the Massachusetts State House grounds tour). This painting was done in the earlier years by the artist prior to moving from Melrose to Hawaii, where he became a very important artist.
