    Attributed Daniel Pabst (German / American, 1826-1910), possibly from a design by Frank Heyling Furness (American, 1839-1912), circa 1875. Victorian era Aesthetic Movement ebonized 'Modern Gothic' library cabinet, having a pierced gallery rail, foliate carving, center paneled door with Minton tiles depicting William Shakespeare and possibly a younger Horace Howard Furness (American, 1833-1912), flanked by glazed doors, and rising on a plinth base, apparently unmarked. Note: Lindenshade, the Wallingford, PA, home of Horace Furness, a noted Shakespearean scholar, was built to designs attributed to his brother Frank Furness. Multiple fittings including the library were crafted by Pabst. Provenance: Fontaine's Auction Gallery, Pittsfield, MA, October 26, 2013, lot 148; Freeman's, Philadelphia, PA, October 28, 2020, lot 112. Approximate dimensions: h. 66.5", w. 83.5", d. 19.75".

    A glazed walnut double bookcase Attributed to Frank Furness (American, 1839-1912) and Daniel Pabst (American, b. Germany, 1826-1910), USA, circa 1875-1885 Walnut, glass, brass hardware, of architectonic form and in two parts (a left and right, each with one finished side and one unfinished side, and with unfinished backs), when combined presenting with two doors with arched glazed openings, below a ridged “roof”, punctuated by trefoil-carved finials incised with stylized foliate motifs, all flanked and centered by composite columns with stylized foliate capitals, on engaged plinths, a band of bosses punctuating the circular shafts, concave rosettes above the capitals and below the socle, all on a tall plinth base with sloped front; each cabinet with five movable shelves and ten shelf cleats; key present. (H: 81 1/8 in. W: 41 3/8 in. D: 15 1/2 in. (each, approximately)) Qty: (2) Provenance Installed at "Fairhill", Isaac Norris VI Residence, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Property from a Private Philadelphia Area Collection. Note The present lot is of a suite of library woodwork and furniture attributed to Furness and Pabst that was likely originally commissioned for a house in Philadelphia and later reinstalled at Fairhill, the residence of Isaac Norris VI, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania (designed 1896 by Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr. and demolished circa 2000). The Norris library mantel surround, overmantel mirror, and ten other bookcases were gifted to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2003, and transferred to the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2017. A further separate gift of fittings from the Norris library was made to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2021, comprising a desk, two armchairs, a couch, a wall pocket with the same crest as the overmantel mirror, and an eleventh bookcase. Very good original condition, with minor surface wear commensurate with age and use; a few short scratches, scuffs, and areas of heavier wear. One rear ridge missing from side "roof" of proper left hand case. Dimensions provided are approximate, with up to 1/2 in. variation between the two halves of the combined case. At least four shelves later custom-milled replacements.

    FURNESS SIDEBOARD - Aesthetic Period Two-Part Red Walnut Sideboard attributed to Architect Frank Furness (Philadelphia, 1839-1912), in stepback form with upper central cabinet having engraved inset panel with decorative brass hinges, flanked by open shelves, four paneled and velour lined drawers below with brass ring pulls, the lower cabinet set on trestle feet, has inset beaded paneled doors between shaped stanchions, the working surface with pierced end rails, all original and unique brass hardware, inset panel ends with engraved decoration, 34" tall working surface, 69" tall overall, 25 1/2" x 60", top crest missing, loss to one foot, minor scuffs.
