          Est: £200 - £300

Circle of Michael Dahl,  Swedish c.1659-1743-  Portrait of a young child, half-length, wearing a plumed cap;  oil on canvas laid down on panel, 48.5 x 34.3 cm. (unframed), together with: Follower of Henry Fuseli, RA, Swiss/British 1741-1825- Head of a young man; oil on panel, 30.1 x 25.1 cm., two (2), (unframed).  Note:  This portrait of a child exhibits similarities with Dahl's portraits, such as his portrait of George Hunt as a child, now in the collection of the National Trust [884952].  The sharply exaggerated, almost caricaturistic male face of the second item recalls the theatrical figures painted by Fuseli, like his depiction of 'Beatrice' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 9 November 1994 (lot 75), with the features of this particular figure bearing a resemblance to 'Lysander with Helena and Hermia' which was offered at Sotheby's, London, on 7 December 2017 (lot 216).

Fuseli (Henry, 1741-1825). Study after Michelangelo's Last Judgement, 1775, pen and ink * Fuseli (Henry, 1741-1825). Study after Michelangelo's Last Judgement, circa 1775, pen and brown ink on antique laid paper, with watermark of a crossbow (probably late 16th century, similar to Briquet 729), slight loss to extreme lower left margin and to lower right corner, edges restrengthened to verso, inscribed in pencil in a later hand to verso 'Henry Fuseli i/ Rome after Michelangelo £ 9. 10. 0' and in another hand 'Michel Angelo', sheet size 205 x 315 mm (8.1 x 12.4 ins), window-mounted QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Collection of Michael Jaffé (1923 –1997), former director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Fuseli travelled to Italy in 1770 and settled in Rome, where he remained until 1778. There he studied classical sculpture and especially Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. According to Allan Cunningham in his Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, 1830, 'It was a story he loved to repeat, how he lay on is back day after day, and week succeeding week, with upturned and wondering eyes, musing at the splendid ceiling of the Sistine Chapel - on the unattainable grandeur of the Florentine…He fulfilled the injunction of Reynolds - he ate and drank and slept and waked upon Michelangelo’. The present work is a sketch of the lower right portion of Michelangelo's famous Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel, depicting the arrival of tormented souls across the River Styx in Charon's boat to the land of the dead (as described in Dante's Divine Comedy), where they are received by demons.

          Est: $1,500 - $3,000

Henry Fuseli - Johann Heinrich Fussli (Swiss, 1741-1825) - Anne de Pisseleu - Duchess of Eampes, Pencil on Paper, 1808. Signed and dated. Titled - La Duchesse d Etampes. 32x22cm. Henry Fuseli RA was a Swiss painter, draughtsman and writer on art who spent much of his life in Britain. Many of his works, such as The Nightmare, deal with supernatural subject-matter. He painted works for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, and created his own "Milton Gallery". He held the posts of Professor of Painting and Keeper at the Royal Academy. His style had a considerable influence on many younger British artists, including William Blake. Fuseli was born in Zurich, Switzerland, the second of 18 children. His father was Johann Caspar Fussli, a painter of portraits and landscapes, and author of Lives of the Helvetic Painters. He intended Henry for the church, and sent him to the Caroline college of Zurich, where he received an excellent classical education. One of his schoolmates there was Johann Kaspar Lavater, with whom he became close friends. After taking orders in 1761, Fuseli was forced to leave the country as a result of having helped Lavater to expose an unjust magistrate, whose powerful family sought revenge. He travelled through Germany, and then, in 1765, visited England, where he supported himself for some time by miscellaneous writing. Eventually, he became acquainted with Sir Joshua Reynolds, to whom he showed his drawings. Following Reynolds' advice, he decided to devote himself entirely to art. In 1770 he made an art-pilgrimage to Italy, where he remained until 1778, changing his name from Fussli to the more Italian-sounding - Fuseli. Early in 1779 he returned to Britain, taking in Zurich on his way. In London he found a commission awaiting him from Alderman Boydell, who was then setting up his Shakespeare Gallery. Fuseli painted a number of pieces for Boydell, and published an English edition of Lavater's work on physiognomy. He also gave William Cowper some valuable assistance in preparing a translation of Homer. In 1788 Fuseli married Sophia Rawlins (originally one of his models), and he soon after became an associate of the Royal Academy. The early feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, whose portrait he had painted, planned a trip with him to Paris, and pursued him determinedly, but after Sophia's intervention the Fuselis' door was closed to her forever. Fuseli later said "I hate clever women. They are only troublesome". In 1790 he became a full Academician, presenting Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent as his diploma work. In 1799 Fuseli was appointed professor of painting to the Academy. Four years later he was chosen as Keeper, and resigned his professorship, but resumed it in 1810, continuing to hold both offices until his death. As Keeper, he was succeeded by Henry Thomson. In 1799 Fuseli exhibited a series of paintings from subjects furnished by the works of John Milton, with a view to forming a Milton gallery comparable to Boydell's Shakespeare gallery. There were 47 Milton paintings, many of them very large, completed at intervals over nine years. The exhibition proved a commercial failure and closed in 1800. In 1805 he brought out an edition of Pilkington's Lives of the Painters, which did little for his reputation. Antonio Canova, when on his visit to England, was much taken with Fuseli's works, and on returning to Rome in 1817 caused him to be elected a member of the first class in the Academy of St Luke.

          Est: $4,000 - $8,000
