    Etching on paper by Alan Jay Gaines, born 1942, an American artist and printmaker specializing in nautical subjects and trains. The artwork depicts a steamboat in the port. Titled The River Steamboat Robert E. Lee. Dated 1977 in the lower left. Signed by the artist in the lower right. This etching is third in the series of four artworks, titled Historic Ships of America, commissioned and published by the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art. The artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity. White mat, golden frame. The Robert E. Lee steamboat was the best-known of the palatial craft of 19th-century America. Measures 12-in. x 17.75-in. plate size, 18-in. x 23.875-in. sheet size. In VG/EX condition. Unframed, loose and not mounted or glued down. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs.     Two Alan Jay Gaines (b. 1942) Maritime Etchings done for the Collectors Guild. Framed and matted. 1 at 20 3/4"x18 3/4"x1 1/4" and 1 at 22 1/4"x19 1/2"x1 1/4". Weight combined 7 pds. A contemporary American printmaker, Alan Gaines also listed as Alan Jay Gaines attended New York University. He then studied etching and engraving techniques under John Ross at Parsons School of Design. Since 1970, Alan Gaines has created many fine etchings, most dealing with nautical subjects and trains. His work has long been recognized for its precise detail and attention to historical authenticity. Gaines's art has been the subject of numerous one man exhibitions, including shows at South Street Seaport and the Oestricher Gallery. Today his art is included in many collections, such as the Gallerie Nautique, France, and the Wiseman Gallery, Rhode Island.
