  • Theodore Gall, California / Illinois (b.1941), figure on a wheel, 1976, steel sculpture, 24"H x 13"W
    Apr. 26, 2025

    Theodore Gall, California / Illinois (b.1941), figure on a wheel, 1976, steel sculpture, 24"H x 13"W

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Theodore Gall California / Illinois, (b.1941) figure on a wheel, 1976 steel sculpture signed / engraved to base. Biography from the Archives of askART: Showing an early aptitude for art, Ted Gall's mother enrolled him in Saturday classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. Only eleven years old he rode the train to class by himself every Saturday, never missing a session. In high school his counselors steered him towards an industrial arts curriculum, the first of many experiences which would help define the artist. In industrial arts Gall learned to weld, work with power tools and think in three dimension. After high school Gall worked at an animation studio in Chicago, starting off as a gopher and eventually being hired as an animator. Gall loved the work, but left it to join the Marines and serve in the Vietnam War. Gall then married and took a job in the graphic design division of a printing company. Unsatisfied with the job, Gall signed up for night classes at the Art Institute where he studied sculpture and pursued a bachelor's degree. A friend of Gall's told him about an automobile parts manufacturer in Skokie, Illinois who was starting an artist-in-residence program. Gall applied and got the position in which he could use the company scarps to create art. Gall stayed with the company, Fel-Pro for 20 years. His job grew to include graphic design and corporate identity work. In the late 1980s Gall and his wife decided to move to Southern California. In California his artwork and own style developed. He began making more sophisticated figures and heads which he then decorated with accent pieces which defined the sculpture. Ted Gall continues to experiment and grow with his art from his home and studio in Ojai, California. Source: Southwest Art, July 2005

  • Theodore Gall Bronze Sculpture - Alligator Attack
    Mar. 27, 2025

Theodore Gall Bronze Sculpture - Alligator Attack

    Est: $3,000 - $4,500

Theodore Gall (American, XX-XXI). Bronze on stone base. Signed "T. Gall" on bronze base. A remarkable metamorphic bronze sculpture by Ted Gall that is full of surprises. Created via the traditional lost wax process, this bronze presents three configurations. Initially, we see the head of an alligator with sea grass at the back which is populated by a rowboat of two people with an alligator on the underside. The alligator's head opens up to reveal the visage of a man sporting a pair of crests lining his bald head. This face then lifts to expose a continuation of the scene on the verso, with two more figures in a boat and an alligator beneath surrounded by towering blades of sea grass. Size (closed): 7" L x 4.25" W x 4" H (17.8 cm x 10.8 cm x 10.2 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand; (open): 5" L x 9.5" W x 6.25" H (12.7 cm x 24.1 cm x 15.9 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand. It's a feast for our imagination. In Gall's words, "I intend for my sculpture to be intriguing, both visually and psychologically, to draw your imagination into the pieces themselves, allowing you to come to your own conclusions." About the Artist: "Theodore T. Gall began his career in the arts in the mid-sixties as an animator for teaching films and continued to broaden his skills as a graphic designer. Gall has worked in metal since his early days as an artist. Although his work has not been limited to the human form, it has been his primary focus throughout his career. His compelling figures are most often placed in thought-provoking situations. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art and has shared his expertise with students at the Clay People in Chicago, The Northshore Art League in Winnetka, Illinois, and the Ojai Art Center in Ojai, California. Gall has exhibited and garnered awards throughout the country and is acquiring a burgeoning international clientele." Created via the traditional lost wax process, this bronze presents three configurations. Initially, we see the head of an iguana with orchid blossoms adorning the back side which is populated by miniature figures. The iguana's head opens to reveal the visage of a man sporting a mohawk hairdo that resembles an avian form, with wings flanking his face. This visage lifts to reveal a fantastical miniature figural scene with a petite reptile donning a top hat and three even more petite human figures entertaining him. On the back of the head is another captivating scene featuring tiny figures climbing a mini staircase and others riding a mini iguana that crawls upon the oversized orchids. Feb. 10, 2024

Theodore Gall, California/Illinois (b. 1941), Oz, Tin Man, bronze metamorphic sculpture

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Theodore Gall California/Illinois, (b. 1941) Oz, Tin Man bronze metamorphic sculpture Theodore Gall trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and has worked in animation, graphic design and sculptural works focusing on the human form. This piece is a metal bust-length sculptural portrait of the famous Tin Man from L. Frank Baum's iconic 1900 book, The Wizard of Oz. The Tin Man was found rusted in a forest by Dorothy who uses his oil can to help him come to life; he then follows her to the Emerald City in an attempt to obtain a heart from the Wizard who gives him a placebo version made of silk and sawdust. The Tin Man character gained further fame in the 1939 classic film version of the story, and in dozens of 20th and 21st c. renditions of this famous American story. Theodore Gall has incorporated many intricate details from that story into his brass version of the character. He invented a metamorphic sculpture that allows the character's head to lift up in order for the viewer to be able to look directly into the Tin Man's chest cavity to examine his heart, the subject of his quest in the Land of Oz. Other elements from the mysterious forest are included around his face and neck. On a marble plinth.

Theodore Gall (American, born 1941) Surrealistic Bronze Bust

    Est: $400 - $600

Theodore Gall (American, 1941-) Surrealistic Bronze Bust Man Hinged Hat. Unsigned. Attributed to T. Gall. From the lifetime collection of Jeff and Bunny Dell - East Hampton, NY. Measures 11.4 inches high including wooden base. In good condition. From AskArt: Theodore T. Gall has exhibited and garnered awards throughout the country and is acquiring a burgeoning international clientele. ? REVIEWS "This exhibition highlights recent, small-scale bronze and stainless steel works by Ojai artist, Ted Gall, whose career has national repute. His sculpted figures and heads are not only a tribute to his technical expertise in the lost wax casting process and patination, but also a tribute to his keen psychological insight and ability to engage through wit and punning twists." Carnegie Museum?Oxnard, California "It's much more interesting and powerful than other metal sculptures being developed here and nationally because of that personal point of view. His whole scope and his facility with style, symbolism, and metaphor is unique." Gerd Koch, Artist and Curator at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center, Cal State, Channel Islands "His imagination is limitless, and he puts it down in physical form. You walk through his studio and see his themes are so universal. I look at it and say, hey that's me." Donna Granata, Executive Director, Focus on the Masters. Showing an early aptitude for art, Ted Gall's mother enrolled him in Saturday classes at the Art Institute of Chicago.
