  • ÉMILE GALLÉ, (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904). Vase. Cameo glass. Signed.
    Apr. 24, 2025

ÉMILE GALLÉ, (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904). Vase. Cameo glass. Signed.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,200

ÉMILE GALLÉ, (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904). Vase. Cameo glass. Signed. Measurements: 26 cm (height); 11 cm (largest diameter). Vase of cameo glass worked to acid, decorated with flowers of large pistils in reddish brown tone on a base in yellow and orange tones. It is a typical work of Gallé's industrial production, with large plant motifs captured with naturalism and movement, in an asymmetrical composition. Émile Gallé began his career working for his father, who owned a glass and ceramics factory, making designs with floral and heraldic motifs. Very interested in botany, he studied it in depth during his youth, alternating with drawing classes. Between 1862 and 1864, at his father's request, he traveled through Italy, England and Germany, becoming interested in the applied arts but also in subjects that he would later reflect in his works, such as music, philosophy and nature. On his return, he settled in Meisenthal, where his family's glass furnaces were, in order to fully learn the craft of glassmaking. He also traveled to London and Paris to see the collections of their museums. In 1874 he took over his father's factory, and soon achieved great international success, winning awards at international exhibitions and selling works to major collections and museums. Today, pieces made by Émile Gallé can be seen in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the Brohan Museum in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among many others.

    PEONY LAMP

    Est: ¥10,000,000 - ¥15,000,000

signed in cameo on the shade and the base certificate by Western Art Merchant Association of Japan This magnificent large lamp by Gallé features a garden of peonies that seem to bloom as if ignited when lit. Gallé created lamps in various sizes, and this piece, with a shade diameter of φ46 cm, stands out as one of the largest. Despite many similar works suffering damage due to their size, this piece is remarkably well-preserved, making it extremely valuable. The beautifully contrasting colors of the multi-layered cased glass showcase the peony petals in layers, intricately carved with varying depths through the technique of acid etching, capturing the realistic appearance of the robust leaves and stems that extend powerfully. By deliberately carving away the yellow inner layer, the vibrancy of the flowers is accentuated, resulting in a stunning finish. Additionally, the bronze fittings are decorated with scarab motifs, which is worth noting. It appears as if three charming scarabs have been attracted by the scent of the peonies, resting upon the leaves. This exquisite piece reflects Gallé's profound affection for plants and animals. A work with similar design was sold for 26 million yen at New Art Est-Ouest auctions in March 2022.

signed in intaglio on the body certificate by Western Art Merchant Association of Japan This piece is a representative work of the Art Deco period by Gallé. Utilizing the sufflé technique, where glass is blown into a pre-shaped mold, the entire vase is three-dimensionally expressed with a family of six elephants. The decorative arabesque patterns representing clouds at the top and the palm trees are designed simply, creating an Eastern aesthetic that complements the overall color scheme. Among similar designed works, the green variant is rare and scarce. It is a masterpiece with a high level of perfection in design, color, and form.

VASE "IN PRAISE OF VALVE STEEL INDUSTRY"

    Est: ¥2,000,000 - ¥3,000,000

We would like to thank Professor Samuel Provost of the University of Lorraine (Nancy, France) for his scholarly interest in this rare work. Please refer to the images of the article for more information. signed in intaglio on the body; inscribed "A MONSIEUR EMILE THOMAS SES AMIS ET COLLABORATEURS 1891-1931 (To Monsieur Emile Thomas / his friends and collaborators 1891-1931)" on the foot certificate by Western Art Merchant Association of Japan The Émile Thomas vase, created by Établissements Gallé around 1931, is a unique Art Deco piece commemorating Émile Thomas's 40-year career at the French steel company Hauts-Fourneaux et Fonderies de Pont-à-Mousson (PAM SA). The vase's design, attributed to Gallé's artistic director Auguste Herbst, features detailed scenes of cast-iron pipe production and global export, including imagery of Rio de Janeiro's Sugar Loaf Mountain. Additional motifs include international landmarks viewed through pipe cylinders and portraits symbolizing mining and commerce. Notably, the vase omits PAM SA's name and logo, suggesting it was a private gift from Thomas's colleagues rather than an official company commission. The inscription on the recessed foot at the base of the vase indicates that it was a gift: A MONSIEUR EMILE THOMAS SES AMIS ET COLLABORATEURS 1891-1931 (To Monsieur Emile Thomas / his friends and collaborators 1891-1931). The design draws inspiration from the Art Deco interiors of PAM SA's Nancy headquarters, particularly elements by artists like Jacques Grüber and Émile Just Bachelet. As one of the last private commissions before Établissements Gallé's closure in 1931, the vase holds significant historical and artistic value.

engraved "E ⱡ G" in intaglio on the body certificate by Western Art Merchant Association of Japan The koi (Japanese, "carp") design on this vase is believed to be borrowed from the book "Gyokai-fu," published in 1802 by the Edo period ukiyo-e artist Kuwagata Keisai. In the late 19th century, the opening of Japan to the world had a significant impact on European art, with bold colors and compositions from Japanese art making a profound impression. This phenomenon, known as "Japonisme," is vividly expressed in this work, strongly reflecting Gallé's admiration for Japanese aesthetics.
