    GANKU (1756?-1838) AND GANTAI (1782 – 1865): PICTURE ROLL WITH MONKEY IN PINETREE BRANCHES

    Ink and some paint on paper. Japan, with dating 1824 This ink-brush painting is focused entirely on bringing the monkey to life in as inspired a manner as possible. The monkey is hanging from a possibly ritually stretched rope, as is typical in the Shinto cult. Because of the monkey’s weight, the rope is hanging down heavily. The monkey’s head is lowered towards the knotted branch of a pine tree. The subtle use of pain on the monkey’s face accentuates, above all, the eyes. The monkey (saru, 猿) occupies the 9th position in the zodiac. It was also believed that monkeys could dispel evil, leading to their being considered divine messengers. In the lower right-hand corner of the image is the signature GAN-KU 岸 駒 in a very abbreviated form. To its left is the signature Utsusu saru Echizen Kami GANTAI 寫 猿 越 前 守 岸 岱, with “Echizen Kami” being an honorary title also held by Ganku. There are also two red seals, one of which is Ganku Hizen, while other reads Gantai Kunchin. Gantai was a son, or student, of Ganku. The shared “Gan” is their family name. The silk-brocade mounting is recent and the rollers ivory. The wooden box features an inscription from Gantai on the outside, a single character on the top meaning “monkey”. On the bottom of the lid is an inscription with, among other things, the dating reads Bunsei 7th year, i.e. 1824. A Japanese certificate accompanies the rolls.
