Estimation 15 000 - 20 000 €

Peche de la Baleine Whale-Fisery Colored aquatint Ambroise L. Garneray (French, 1783-1857), with gallery label from The Old Print Shop, Lexington Ave, New York on verso h. 21-1/4 w. 31 in. overall: 26-3/4 x 36-1/4 in. (frame) Considered one of the best whaling prints. The print is noted in Herman Melville's book "Moby Dick." "But, taken for all in all, by far the finest, though in some details not the most correct, presentations of whales and whaling scenes to be anywhere found, are two large French engravings, well executed, and taken from paintings by one Garnery. Respectively, they represent attacks on the Sperm and Right Whale. . . Who Garnery [sic] the painter is, or was, I know not. But my life for it he was either practically conversant with his subject, or else marvelously tutored by some experienced whaleman." [Ambroise Louis GARNERAY]

          Est: €10,000 - €15,000

[Ambroise Louis GARNERAY]. Brunet III-582 / Polack 3745. I. (3f.)-24-20 pl. / II. 50-24 pl. / III. 34-20 pl.
