      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Ambroise-Louis Garneray (Paris, 1783-1857) Vue du port d'Anvers Original canvas (Binant) Signed on the bottom left ‘Garneray' H 47×L 68,5 cm Bears a number on the back ‘No 3' Old restorations Provenance: Chez Dickinson (according to a label on the back) This work can be compared to the canvas found in the Chambre de Commerce and d'Industrie de Paris (see L. Manœuvre, Louis Garneray, Arcueil, 1997, color illustration p. 74) Answering requests from enthusiasts, Louis Garneray created several works with the same subject and dimensions. This one could be one of three paintings exhibited at the 1831, 1836 and 1844 Salons: Salon de 1831, no 858, Vue du grand bassin de la ville d'Anvers, prise du haut de la batterie de l'Empereur ; Salon de 1836, no 794, Vue d'Anvers ; Salon de 1844, no 757, Vue d'Anvers In the background, Notre-Dame d'Anvers cathedral is visible. In the middleground, other administrative and defensive buildings appear, dating back to the port's modernization under Imperial rule.

Vues des cotes de France is widely acclaimed as "a magnificent collection of views" (Deak, Vol 1, p. 291). Each print exhibits endless attention to detail, incorporating architectual landmarks, ships, weather conditions, animals and costumed figures in the midst of daily activities. Garneray makes superb use of the aquatitnt medium, which enables subtle variations in tone and reproduces the looks and feel of watercolor more successfully that any other method of engraving. This set is of even greater interest; each print is an artist's proof, retouched and in some cases completely colored, by Garneray himself. Garneray Oil of Battle of Santo Domingo in the Napoleonic Wars

      Est: $12,000 - $25,000

GARNERAY, Ambroise-Louis (1783-1857). Sir John Thomas Duckworth's Action of Santo Domingo, 6th Feb, 1806. Oil on canvas. Signed upper left. 19" x 30 1/4" canvas, 22" x 34" framed. This painting by the noted French marine artist Ambroise-Louis Garneray depicts an important but little known event during the Napoleonic Wars, the Battle of Santo Domingo. The British declared war against France on May 16, 1803. Napoleon had been planning to invade Britain, and when he crowned himself Emperor of France in December 1804 and began massing troops in seaside towns along the Channel, the British mobilized their naval forces to prevent the Emperor's plan from succeeding. After a series of naval battles led to the near-decimation of the French fleet, Napoleon was forced to abandon his plan of invading England for the time being. Instead he decided to try to disrupt British trade in the West Indies, trade that helped finance the British war effort. Two French squadrons, commanded by Rear-Admiral Willaumez and Vice-Admiral Leissegues, sailed for the West Indies. When news of their operations reached Vice-Admiral Sir John Duckworth, who was blockading Cadiz, he sailed with six ships for Madeira. He finally caught up with the French squadron off Santo Domingo, and in the ensuing battle the five French ships were all captured or driven on shore in a decisive defeat. Garneray's depiction of the event might be better characterized as an atmospheric seascape than a battle scene. The clear blue sky, calm seas, and lush hills of Santo Domingo, all beautifully painted in jewel-like colors, almost take precedence over the battle scene, though a more careful investigation reveals the smoke from canon fire and one ship, in the foreground, destroyed. Despite the ostensible subject of this work, Garneray's mastery of light and movement are fully in evidence in this engaging composition.

(54.3 x 107.3 cm.); 22 3/4 x 44 1/8 in. (57.8 x 112.1 cm.) a pair (2) PROVENANCE: (the former) Property of Sir Harold Parkinson, J. P., Christie's, London, 9 May 1969, lot 57. (both) The Clive Lloyd Collection. In these powerful paintings, the line of prison ships form a dark diagonal across the images from the left foreground to the centre of the picture. Behind these ships, to the south-east, lies the town of Portsmouth, its skyline visible against the sky in the centre, with Gosport to the right and the entrance to the Harbour in the centre. To the right other ships, with pennants flying, are also anchored 'in ordinary' (reserve) in the Upper Harbour.  A swathe of pink cloud dominates the sky, but the sea contrasts darkened areas on the hulks to the more brilliant light above the channel, which leads the viewer’s eye to the open sea and France – an emotional longing by Garneray to escape his long internment. Pirate, privateer, French Naval officer and Painter to the Emperor - Ambroise Louis Garneray was an archetypal ‘Renaissance Man’. His father was an artist and pupil to the great Jacques-Louis David, which gave Garneray an excellent artistic upbringing. Ambroise, however, persuaded his father to let him go to sea at the tender age of 13 as part of the French Navy, and he soon found himself in the Indian Ocean off Ile de France (modern day Mauritius). When there was a shortage of Naval vessels, Ensign Garnerary decided to join the famous Breton privateer Robert Surcouf, and become the scourge of East India Company shipping in the Indian Ocean. During this time Surcouf captured the Royal Navy’s HMS Kent near the coast of India thus taking a fortune in prize money, and Garneray not only received his share of booty, but was also asked to paint pictures of the heroic action as an eye-witness and crew member. In March 1806 after various privateering and trading trips, Garneray was captured by the English and spent the next 8 years on a Prisoner of War hulk in Portsmouth harbour. The loss of the American colonies in the 1770s as a place to send prisoners condemned to transportation, created an acute shortage of prison space. There was no time to build more prisons so as a temporary measure some ships were converted into prison hulks, which could easily be made secure although the conditions aboard their often-rotting hulls were tough. It was during the French Wars of 1793 to 1815 that the greatest use of hulks was made to accommodate additional prisoners of war. In order to make his incarceration more bearable Garneray managed to paint and sell views of the hulks via a local art dealer. This helped improve his conditions in captivity, in the way that many other prisoners also did by making ship models or other handicrafts. When Napoleon abdicated in 1814, the British freed their prisoners and Garneray returned to Paris, continuing to work as an artist. He later wrote three popular autobiographies recounting his adventurous double career as a sailor, corsair and artist.

      19th C. French Engraving - Garneray's "La Rochelle"

      Est: $800 - $1,200

**Originally Listed At $500** Ambroise-Louis Garneray (French, 1783-1857), "Vue de port de La Rochelle" (View of the port of La Rochelle), ca. 1830 to 1850 CE. A wonderful and very large maritime engraving depicting a view of the port of La Rochelle - a marvelous example of French cultural history in North America. According to Didier Poton, "La Rochelle’s history is the history of its various ports, which manifest La Rochellers’ ability to embrace the changing dynamics of the Atlantic seaway in the 12th through the 18th centuries. La Rochelle’s early involvement in the great discoveries and its commerce with the Americas and the rest of the world—determined by the whims of colonial shipping companies and economic opportunities—established this port town as one of the major seaboard towns of the Atlantic realm." (http://www.ameriquefrancaise.org/en/article-628/La_Rochelle_and_French_North_America_.html) Size: 18.5" W x 14" H (47 cm x 35.6 cm); 35.24" W x 31" H (89.5 cm x 78.7 cm) including custom mats and frame under glass Ambroise-Louis Garneray is generally regarded as one of the greatest French marine painters, as well as an engraver and writer. He came by it honestly, as his father was one of the preeminent Neo-Classical artist Jacques-Louis David's (1748-1825) first students. What's more, he was a seaman. In 1796, at the age of thirteen, young Garneray joined the French avy, encouraged by his cousin, Beaulieu-Leloup, who was also the commander of a frigate. Garneray served during campaigns and sea battles against the British in the Indian Ocean around Mauritius - he was even captured as a prisoner of war at one point. In addition to maritime views, he painted miniatures, portraits, and narrative/historicizing genre scenes in what became known as the Troubadour style, essentially a branch of Romanticism responsible for producing French historical paintings that depicted idealized scenes inspired by the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
