    • WILLIAM GARNETT (1916-2006) PENCIL SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH
      Sep. 21, 2024

WILLIAM GARNETT (1916-2006) PENCIL SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH

      Est: $1,500 - $3,000

William Garnett (1916-2006) Reflection of the Sun on Dendritic Flow 1963/1979 The silver gelatin print is signed by the artist in pencil lower right on the mount. William Garnett is an acclaimed American photographer known for his pioneering work in aerial photography. He piloted smaller Cessna planes to capture his striking, sometimes abstract, images from above, emphasizing the patterns, textures and forms of the natural environment. The following is a quote by the artist found on Wikipedia, '' I was discharged and heard you could hitchhike on the transport taking GIs home. The airplane was full, but the captain let me sit in the navigator's seat so I had a command view. I was amazed at the variety and beauty of these United States. I had never seen anything like that-in a book, in school, or since then. So I changed my career.'' He won three Guggenheim Fellowships to aid in pursuing his passion, and went on to write a number of books. His work was featured in a great number of exhibitions both during his life and posthumously. Acclaim came early on with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art as early as 1955, just ten years after that ride home in the navigator's seat. Garnett's work is held in numerous museum collections and the subject of shows even today. Image measures 7.25 x 19.5 with a framed size of 19.5 x 29.25 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. Gelatin silver print, image/sheet size 13 3/4 x 10 7/8 in. (34.8 x 27.5 cm), matted, framed. Condition: Mounted. Provenance: The estate of artist Terri Priest, Worcester, Massachusetts. N.B. After serving as a United States Army Signal Corps cameraman during World War II, William Garnett became a pilot after a cross-country flight inspired him to photograph the American landscape from above. He learned to fly on the G.I. Bill and bought his first plane in 1947. Over the course of 10,000 hours of flying, Garnett piloted his plane while simultaneously photographing out the window. Without the conventional grounding of a horizon line, his aerial photographs become abstractions of the landscape revealing beautiful and sometimes ambiguous patterns in the natural terrain that are not observable from the ground. The first aerial photographer to earn a prestigious Guggenheim fellowship, Garnett's work defies the stereotype of aerial photography as purely scientific and devoid of artistic expression.
