GARNIER Charles (1825 - 1898) 10 L.A.S. «Ch. Garnier», [1856 ?]-1870, à Edmond ABOUT ; 30 pages in-8, 6 à en-tête du Ministère de la Maison de l'Empereur et des Beaux-Arts. Travaux du Nouvel Opéra. Bureau de l'Architecte, une sur papier-deuil. Belle et amusante correspondance amicale de l'architecte à l'écrivain. [Edmond ABOUT (1828 - 1885) a fait, en 1852, un long séjour en Grèce avec Charles Garnier et le peintre Alfred de Curzon.] Lundi [1856 ?] : «d'un bon jeune homme à un autre bon jeune homme» ; il annonce au «Bien aimé Valentin» (3e prénom d'About) qu'il vient d'être nommé «sous inspecteur à l'école des mines» et a rencontré M. Bernard qui n'a cessé de lui citer Virgile et Homère ; sur un ton humoristique, Garnier écrit alors une phrase décrivant son ami et employant les lettres de l'alphabet grec : «Valentin est un gros bêta, il veut écrire tant pi, c'est un fichu eta», etc. Dimanche matin [5 janvier 1862], sur l'échec de la pièce Gaetana : «Est-ce une pièce que tu as fait là je n'en sais rien en tout cas c'est bizarre spirituel assez méchant, il n'en faut pas plus pour te faire beaucoup d'ennemis» ; il conseille : «tâche d'éviter quelques longueurs et ne mets jamais en scène un homme ivre il est très rare que cela n'ennuie pas [...] Je ne veux pas te dire par là de devenir filandreux et poncif, ça te serait du reste impossible»...Mais qu'il fasse lire sa pièce à quelques bons amis qui lui diront franchement «si quelque chose nous choque»... Paris, 15 avril 1864 : remerciement «tout bref, mais du fond du coeur» après sa nomination de chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. 5 avril 1865. Il y a un concours à Lisbonne pour un monument à Don Pedro dont le jugement aurait dû être rendu en février. Garnier demande à son ami de «dire un mot de ce retard dans tes causeries du samedi. L'Opinion a à ce qu'il parait un large cours à Lisbonne et tes articles y sont fort goutés'» ; il a fait partie «d'un jury pour le concours d'un monument à élever à Nice à Massena. Carrier-Belleuse a à l'unanimité été le premier, puis en second Doublemard et enfin Gérard»... 1866. 25 septembre, à propos du Baron de Groschaminet, opérette en un acte de Charles Nuitter sur un livret de Charles Garnier : «Groschaminet très réussi hier soir, c'est un beau fleuron de plus à ajouter à ma cou¬ronne !!!!!! et moi aussi je suis auteur ! - oh les frémissements de la foule ! les bravos ! les 500 personnes qui rient librement d'un calembour plus bête encore ! [...] ma vocation est décidée je lâche le nouvel opéra je renonce à l'architecture». Pourquoi lui parler de parquets «quand je plane au pla¬fond de la gloire» ; About partant en Égypte, Garnier souhaite qu'il ne se trouve pas «dans une situation près Caire (on rit)» ; avec sa femme Louise, il est allé aux bains de mer à Arcachon, puis ils ont fait un voyage en Suisse. - 19 novembre. About est invité à Compiègne : «je sais bien que le petit thé de l'impératrice sera plus gai que d'habitude [...] en fait d'architecte il n'y a là-bas place que pour Viollet Leduc le marchand de fiel». Il en vient à la composition du jury de l'Exposition universelle, et lui donne le décompte des voix pour les architectes : «Mr Duc 25 voix : Ch. Garnier 24, Duban 23» etc. - 29 novembre. Il prie About d'intervenir en faveur de Martinet, directeur du théâtre des Fantaisies parisiennes, où ont été créés «le Florentin, la nouvelle création de Duprato et le baron de Groschaminet, ce chef-d'oeuvre de ton ami». Puisqu'il doit voir Camille Doucet à Compiègne, il pourrait lui dire un mot afin de faire venir la troupe des Fantaisies. Si l'Empereur lui demande quelle est la pièce la plus belle, qu'il réponde «il n'y en a qu'une c'est le baron de Groschaminet - Vraiment dira sa Majesté - C'est comme je vous le dis - Alors on t'écoute on fait venir Martinet et compagnie et le théâtre est sauvé !!!!!!»... [Juin 1867]. Il fait la critique des Salons d'About : «le premier article m'a plu modérément [...] le second était fort bien, mais le troisième, mon cher ami, est un chef d'oeuvre [...] Tu as parlé d'art, là vraiment, je ne dis pas comme un artiste, car ils en parlent assez mal, mais en vrai connaisseur [...] Tu es bien un peu sévère pour DORÉ et cependant je dois avouer que tout ce que tu dis est juste, tu lui portes des coups terribles et mal¬heureusement il les mérite». Il a vu au gala de l'opéra «le fameux czar» [Alexandre II en visite à Paris avec sa femme] : il «ressemble comme deux gouttes d'eau à mon fumiste», avec «un balai de plus, je me serai laissé aller à lui demander de vider les pots» ; il termine sa lettre par un éloge appuyé de la femme d'About. [1869]. Il s'inquiète de la santé d'Alexandrine, la femme d'About. 31 janvier 1870, à la suite d'une lettre de sa femme Louise, il a calligraphié en grosses lettres et en capitales : «Vous dites que j'écris mal. Paris, Ducher, 1880. 4 Bl.; 4 Bl. 65 x 46 cm. Lose Tafeln in Original-Leinwandmappen mit Schließbändern (diese fehlen teils, Band 1 mit Wasserrändern, angestaubt, etwas gebraucht).Nicht im Ornamentstichkatalog Berlin. - Ohne die beiden Textbände und die 4 Tafelbände zu den Statuen, Skulpturen, Bronzen und Gemälden. - Prachtpublikation über die Pariser Oper. "Mit einem Schlage wurde Garniers Name bekannt, als ihm 1861 in dem Wettbewerb um eine neue Oper einstimmig der 1. Preis zuerkannt wurde, nachdem er in einer Vorkonkurrenz 1860 den 5. Preis erhalten hatte. Noch in demselben Jahre begann er den Bau, der - durch den Krieg unterbrochen - erst am 6.1.1875 eingeweiht wurde. Mit dem unerhörten Aufwand von nahezu 50 Millionen Francs hat G. in seiner Oper das bis heute unübertroffene architektonische Prunkstück des modernen Paris geschaffen" (Thieme-B. XIII, 205). - Die Inhalsverzeichnisse geben insgesamt 100 Tafeln an, da die doppelblattgroßen sowie die farbigen Tafeln doppelt nummeriert sind. - Es fehlt in Band 1 die Tafel 9 sowie in Band 2 die Tafel 9/10. - Band 1 teils mit Wasserrand (vereinzelt dort mit rotem Abklatsch von der Mappe), vereinzelt mit kleinen Randläsuren bzw. -einrissen, etwas stockfleckig und angestaubt, etwas muffig.
