    EARLY WORKS...2 OIL ON MASONITE BOARD PAINTINGS BY ADAMS WIRT GARRETT (1908 - 2000) 1. YOUNG GIRL HOLDING DOLL 18" X 8 1/2" SIGNED U/L GARRETT; 2. "ARTIST AT WORK" 12 1/2" X 8 1/8" SIGNED ON REVERSE AW GARRETT 1945 - Biography from the Archives of askART A graphic arts instructor at the Art Students League from 1947 to 1951, Adams Garrett was also a painter. He was born in Forney, Texas and studied in the teacher's college at Columbia University and at the Art Students League in New York. Garrett went to New York in 1931 and commuted by freight train between Oklahoma and New York for four years. Exhibition venues included the Parsons School of Design for the WPA, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He was one of the thirteen prize winners at the fifty-sixth annual American exhibition of oil paintings in October of 1945 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Other prize winners included Edward Hopper, Paul Cadmus and Charles Sheeler. At the same art institute, in October/November of 1940, he was one of the exhibitors of National Art Week sponsored by the WPA. His writings include the statement, "I was born in the South grew up on a farm obsessed with books, people, animals and nature. My family decided I should have instruction in art and they paid a teacher one chicken a week." His memberships included Associated Artists of New Jersey (Director), Life Member, Arts Students League, NYC, and Artists' Equity of New Jersey (Past President). Additional one man shows took place in State University of New York at Alfred, New York, 1972; Mercer College, New Jersey, 1977; Hansen Gallery, NYC, 1977; and Pargo Gallery, Edison, NJ, 1987. He was awarded prizes by the Carnegie Insititute International, Pittsburgh, PA. The Montclair Museum in New Jersey, The Monmouth Museum in New Jersey, the Hunterdon Art Center in New Jersey, and The National Art's Club President's Award, New York.
