  • EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Ladies by the sea". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin.
    Apr. 22, 2025

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Ladies by the sea". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin.

    Est: €18,000 - €20,000

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Ladies by the sea". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 65.5 x 49 cm; 90 x 74 cm (frame). León Garrido had a brilliant pulse to recreate aristocratic scenes, both indoors and outdoors like the one shown here. A group of ladies seated on wicker chairs converse on some delicate subject, as we can deduce from the suspicious gaze of the older one. They hold binoculars in their hands, for they are on a coastal lookout. A little girl in a dress of bolantes and silk ribbons accompanies them, and a shaggy dog plays beside her. The skillful work of glazes and transparencies stands out, especially noticeable in the representation of the gauze of the hat. In the background, a woman leans on the railing to look at the boats dwarfed by the distance. The overcast sky tinges the atmosphere with silver lights. Eduardo León Garrido began his training in Madrid, at the Escuela Superior de Pintura and in the workshop of Vicente Palmaroli, whom he always considered his only teacher. A costumbrist painter, he specialized in dance scenes in rococo salons, and also stood out as a master of female portraiture. When he did not obtain the scholarship to study in Rome, he traveled there by his own means with his teacher Palmaroli, and later to Paris. In 1875 King Alfonso XII acquired one of his paintings, and that same year he obtained a pension from the Diputación de Madrid to study in the French capital, where he completed his training in the studio of Raimundo de Madrazo. The following year he participated for the first time in the Paris Salon, where he presented a "San Jerónimo". He soon attracted the attention of the most prominent art dealer of the time, Adolphe Goupil, for whom he worked for several years. From 1876, Garrido exhibited his works individually in Parisian galleries such as Borniche, showing portraits and contemporary scenes. During this period, he also made numerous trips to Venice, accompanied by Madrazo, Fortuny and Martín Rico. He participated assiduously in the Salons of Paris, as well as in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts of Madrid and in the International Exhibitions of London and Munich, where he obtained great successes of critics and public. Between 1882 and 1894 he no longer participated in the Salon (except in 1884, when he exhibited a portrait of his friend the painter Bréauté), but focused on supplying the Parisian and Madrid galleries with which he had contracts. In 1892 he signed an exclusive contract with Félix Gérard, who imposed on him the theme of casacons, so fashionable at the time. Thus, at this time he will dedicate himself almost exclusively to painting gallant scenes set in the eighteenth century. He soon left Paris and settled in Varenne-Saint-Hilaire (France), where he was quickly integrated into the cultural life and was appointed professor at the local School of Arts and Crafts. In 1895 he exhibited his works again at the Paris Salon, and in 1914 he was granted French nationality. During the first decades of the 20th century he continued to paint, mainly landscapes of the south of France and the Basque Country, as well as portraits of his family and flowers. Currently, Eduardo León Garrido is represented in the Prado Museum and in the Charles Léandre de Condé sur Noireau (France), as well as in important national and foreign private collections.

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Portrait of a lady", La Varenne, 1890. Oil on canvas. Restored Signed, dated and located.

    Est: €7,000 - €8,000

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Portrait of a lady", La Varenne, 1890. Oil on canvas. Restored Signed, dated and located. Measurements: 66 x 54 cm; 91 x 80 x 6 cm (frame). In this work we can appreciate the magnificent gifts as portraitist of Eduardo León Garrido, who offers us a beautiful and young lady of delicate features, elegantly dressed with gloves and a marabou. The girl appears three-quarter length, in a completely natural attitude that departs from the canons of the genre, breaking with the protocol distance that is usually established in the portrait between spectator and model. Likewise, the young woman appears against a neutral background, as was the norm at the time, whose pale light brings out pearly sparkles on her skin. However, the absolute center of the image is the captivating face of the lady, with drooping eyelids, brown dreamy eyes that are directed towards something we do not see, losing themselves in the distance. Eduardo León Garrido began his training in Madrid, at the Escuela Superior de Pintura and in the workshop of Vicente Palmaroli, whom he always considered his only teacher. EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). Untitled. Oil on panel. Signed in the upper left corner. Measurements: 24 x 19 cm; 35 x 29 cm (frame). Eduardo León Garrido began his training in Madrid, in the Superior School of Painting and in the workshop of Vicente Palmaroli, whom he always considered his only teacher.

    Est: €14,000 - €16,000

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Lady reading". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. It possesses frame of epoch. Measurements: 55 x 65 cm; 80.5 x 91.5 cm (frame). Eduardo León offers us an intimate scene contextualized in the interior of a room with a plant, fabrics and cushions. The protagonist, a young woman resting reading a book on a divan, a beautiful young lady with delicate features, elegantly dressed and holding a book in her hands. The colors of the dress, the hairstyle and the elements of the interior are enough to give the work a delicate and discreet elegance, which is reinforced by the whitish and neat complexion of the protagonist. The position of the young woman stands out, with her feet resting on a soft cushion in a reclining position. The loose brushstroke, based on color spots and very luminous, applies a palette of rich chromatism. Eduardo León Garrido began his training in Madrid, at the Escuela Superior de Pintura and in the workshop of Vicente Palmaroli, whom he always considered his only teacher. Eduardo León Garrido,  - The Boating Party;  …

Eduardo León Garrido,  Spanish 1856-1949-  The Boating Party;  oil on canvas, signed 'E L Garrido' (lower left), 58.5 x 81.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Garrido's output is defined by his elaborate genre scenes, depicting figures in extravagant historical dress, typically dancing, making music, or preparing for a ball. The present work is an especially charming example of his work, revealing striking similarities to the fête galante scenes of French Rococo artists Jean-Antoine Watteau (1604-1721) and François Boucher (1703-1770).  Garrido studied at the Escuela Especial de Pintura in Madrid, after which he worked in the studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896), whose elegant and ornate genre scenes undoubtedly influenced his own work. Garrido's paintings also hint towards the influence of artists such as Raimundo Madrazo (1841-1920) and Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), whom he met over the course of his career. Garrido travelled widely, visiting the United States in 1896, where his work enjoyed considerable success, before settling in France, teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts in Varennes-sur-Allier in 1905.

EDUARDO LEÓN GARRIDO (Madrid, 1856 - Caen, France, 1949). "Two ladies". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 75 x 62 cm; 82 x 68 cm (frame). León Garrido's favourite subject was the female portrait. His ability to capture both the beauty and the psychology of the ladies of high society is generously captured here. Two ladies, wearing felt hats and feathered hats, sit on a bench by the harbour, tilting their heads to one side to exchange impressions. One of them has been given a bouquet of flowers and holds a parasol in her suede gloved hand. The elegance of the costume enhances their slender bearing. With swift, vibrant brushstrokes, the painter depicts the diversity of qualities in the garments, as well as the mottling of the sea and the agitation of the port. Eduardo León Garrido began his training in Madrid, at the Escuela Superior de Pintura and in the workshop of Vicente Palmaroli, whom he always considered his only master. In this work we can appreciate Eduardo León Garrido's magnificent skills as a portraitist. He offers us a beautiful young lady with delicate features, elegantly dressed, holding a bouquet of roses in her hands. The girl is depicted in the foreground, bust-length, in a completely natural pose that departs from the canons of the genre, breaking with the formal distance usually established in portraits between the viewer and the model. The young woman also appears against a neutral background, in keeping with the style of the time, whose pale light brings out pearly glints on her skin. However, the absolute centre of the image is the captivating gaze of the lady, with drooping eyelids and dreamy brown eyes that look towards something we cannot see, lost in the distance.
