      (1907 - 1990) American general and commander of the 82nd Airborne at Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. Fine association war-date T.L.S. as commander of the 82nd Airborne on official letterhead, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Feb. 14, 1945 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In part: “…Upon being relieved of your Corps I want to thank you and your staff for the many things that were done to make our service in Victor Corps so pleasant…I regret that I was unable to see you again before you left…I hope, Sir, that we will again have the opportunity to serve with you…” Fine.

      JAMES M. GAVIN (1907 - 1990) American general and commander of the 82nd Airborne at Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Cambridge, Jan. 13, 1967, to an Artur Siemientkowski, responding to a request for a statement on the qualities of generalship, in part: "...It would be impossible to enumerate the attributes of generalship in four or six lines, but I do not really consider them to be much different than those that one would expect a business executive to have. In the main, they would consist of integrity, industry, energy, and personality. Of course, as with any career, a great deal of study and education is essential." Gavin signs boldly at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows an original mailing fold, else very good to fine.

Signed and inscribed book, Gavin''s "On to Berlin: Battles of an Airborne Commander 1943-1946", (New York: The Viking Press), 1978, 336pp. 4to. Gavin signs in blue ink on the half-title, adding the dedication: "To Dr. Richard A. Davis with warm regards" and the date "Boston, Mass Sept 10, 1980". Includes dust jacket, very good.
