RAMÓN GAYA POMÉS, (Murcia, 1910- Valencia, 2005). "Nude", 1946. Ink on paper. Presents restorations on the paper. Signed and dated in the lower right area, Measurements: 10 x 26 cm; 24 x 39 cm (frame). The initial formation of the painter and writer Ramón Gaya came from the hand of the friends of his father Pedro Flores and Luis Garay, and thanks to the library of his father, lithographer. He abandoned formal education to devote himself to painting and, thanks to a scholarship, he moved to Madrid in 1927, where he visited the Prado Museum and met Juan Ramón Jiménez and most of the members of the Generation of 1927. In Paris, he exhibits for the first time and, despite his success, he returns after a few months, disappointed by avant-garde painting, which he ends up rejecting. In the Spanish capital he collaborates with the Pedagogical Missions and makes several copies of paintings from the Prado Museum for the People's Museum, and later travels around Spain with this project. After a series of events during the Civil War (apart from the personal side, he founded the magazine "Hora de España", of which he would be the only cartoonist), he went to Mexico, exiled until 1952, when he decided to return to Europe and spend a year traveling around Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome, and then returned to Mexico. In 1956 he settled in the Italian capital, where he met again with the great masters. In 1960 he finally returned to Spain: he visited the Prado Museum in Madrid and some friends organized an exhibition for him. During this decade he made several trips to Spain, in addition to setting up his studio in Barcelona, and also to Europe. His work could be seen in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Paris..., and his work has been recognized with outstanding mentions: Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 1985, opening of a museum dedicated to his work in Murcia in 1990, National Prize of Plastic Arts in 1997, etc. His creations are kept in important private collections (in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Rome, Paris, Murcia...) and outstanding institutions, apart from the one dedicated exclusively to his figure, such as the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts in Murcia.

RAMÓN GAYA POMES (Murcia, 1910 - Valencia, 2005). "Good Friday Procession with the Image of the Veronica", 1961. Gouache on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. The passe-partout is damp. Frame with lack of polychromy. We thank the Ramón Gaya Museum for their invaluable help in cataloguing this lot. This piece will be included in the artist's Catalogue Raisonné. Measurements: 48 x 63 cm, 67 x 87 cm (frame). In 1961 Ramón Gaya returned to Murcia after many years of exile. He was reunited with Juan Bonafé (a companion from the Pedagogical Missions), with the city and its customs, such as the Good Friday in this picture. Good Friday is the Friday "of the Salzillos" in the city of Murcia, when the sculptor's pasos leave the Church of Nuestro Padre Jesús to process through the streets. Ramón Gaya tells us about Salzillo: Salzillo's "figures" need accomplices, life around them, Murcia around them, the dustiest light holding them by the waist. The figure in the picture is the Veronica. A painter and writer, Ramón Gaya spent his youth between Madrid and Paris, and after the outbreak of the Civil War he left for Mexico, where he remained until 1952. Four years later, in 1956, he returned to Europe and settled temporarily in Rome, where he rediscovered museums and great painting. In 1960 he returned to Spain; in the 1960s he travelled around the country, and in 1969 his fundamental book, "Velázquez, Solitary Bird", was published. In 1984 he was given a retrospective exhibition at the Museo San Pío V in Valencia, and in 1985 the Ministry of Culture awarded him the Gold Medal for Fine Arts. Since then he has received many awards: an anthological exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and at the church of San Esteban in Murcia, the inauguration of a museum dedicated to his work in Murcia, the National Plastic Arts Award, Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Murcia, an exhibition at the IVAM in Valencia, the Gold Medal of the City of Murcia and the Velázquez Award for the Arts in its first edition and finally, two years before his death, an important exhibition at the MNCA Reina Sofía.

We thank the Ramón Gaya Museum for their invaluable help in cataloguing this lot. This piece will be included in the artist's Catalogue Raisonné. Measurements: 40 x 55 cm; 55 x 70 cm (frame). Ramón Gaya, after his arrival in Italy following a long exile, undertook a somewhat 'quixotic' enterprise: the subject painting. Thus, the Murcian painter revisited scenes and themes that recurred throughout the history of painting, both religious and mythological, and which would last until the end of his days. In the painter's own words, "My interest in subject paintings - not to be confused with the history paintings of the 19th century - was rekindled when I arrived in Italy. Titian and Tintoretto were largely to blame. Cézanne, who today seems to me to be one of the most important figures of modernity, had also tried, albeit timidly, with the series of the bathers. In Rome, I kept at it for about ten years. Today, however, little remains of that period: a few gouaches, a few watercolours, a few drawings. I realised that this resurrection of the subject painting could only be carried out by a group of painters who had similar concerns, although with different temperaments - as happened with Titian and Rubens. It is also true that I have not completely abandoned subject painting. It has been a constant preoccupation of mine. Est: €12,000 - €13,000

RAMÓN GAYA POMES (Murcia, 1910 - Valencia, 2005). "Homage to Carpaccio", 1959. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and titled. With light repainting and Sala Gaspar label on the back. We thank the Ramón Gaya Museum for their invaluable help in cataloguing this lot. Measurements: 112 x 143 cm; 116 x 146 cm (frame). In 2022 the Ramón Gaya Museum brought together for the first time ten "Cortesanas", a series "in preparation" as the painter himself defined them. These "subject paintings" are based on Carpaccio's "The Courtesans" (as seen in the print on the wall), a "final work, a painting that ends not an epoch, but ends a... deafness, a state of deafness of painting, and then begins to hear, to hear again - painting had already heard before - to hear life, the musicality of life". Ramón Gaya had a real admiration for this Venetian painter who was "extremely mysterious, miraculous, ineffable, with a secret daring". Carpaccio's Venetian ladies became flesh-and-blood models that Ramón Gaya painted repeatedly and in different poses, always in an interior. Sometimes we see the painter reflected in the mirror or in the window pane. However, the Murcian painter did not use live models at the beginning of the series; he based himself on paintings by the masters of yesteryear. Years later - when he met Isabel Verdejo, his second wife - he began to use her as a model. These works of melancholic women in repose contain a very mysterious, intimate and secret life. The painter's redeemed and pious gaze towards them, his attitude, would be the same as Carpaccio's towards the Courtesans. We thank the Ramón Gaya Museum for their invaluable help in cataloguing this lot. Measurements: 80 x 100 cm; 84 x 107 cm (frame). For Ramón Gaya, the nude "Woman leaving the bath" by Eduardo Rosales is "The most beautiful painting in all modern painting". The Murcian painter thought that this painting in the Museo Nacional del Prado "interrupts modern painting". Gaya himself stated that "In Rosales I have always seen the last great Spanish painter.... old, of an antiquity that is not properly speaking of style or time, but of caste. He is the last gasp of a great, grandiose, generous painting". A painter and writer, Ramón Gaya spent his youth between Madrid and Paris, and after the outbreak of the Civil War he left for Mexico, where he remained until 1952. This image is one of the few perspectives of Madrid painted by Ramón Gaya. It seems to be the dome of the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande, like that 1961 gouache painted from a hotel room or the drawing from inside the Bergamín family home (1968), in Avenida de Portugal, when he was convalescing from gall bladder surgery. A painter and writer, Ramón Gaya spent his youth between Madrid and Paris, and after the outbreak of the Civil War he left for Mexico, where he remained until 1952.

RAMÓN GAYA POMÉS (Murcia, 1910- Valencia, 2005). Untitled, 1926. With slight restorations. Signed and dated in the lower right area. Measurements: 61 x 52 cm. Female portrait in which the artist not only shows us a young woman, but also conveys an archetype of a woman typical of the 20's. It is a young lady with sober clothes, garçon style hair, as was the fashion among the young flappers. However, the most important thing is that the lady is behind a desk, on which are two books whose titles cannot be seen, but even so we can see that she is an educated woman. The initial training of the painter and writer Ramón Gaya came from his father's friends Pedro Flores and Luis Garay, and thanks to the library of his father, a lithographer. He abandoned formal education to devote himself to painting and, thanks to a scholarship, moved to Madrid in 1927, where he visited the Prado Museum and met Juan Ramón Jiménez and most of the members of the Generation of 1927. In Paris he exhibited for the first time and, despite his success, returned after a few months, disappointed by avant-garde painting, which he eventually rejected. In the Spanish capital he collaborated with the Misiones Pedagógicas and made several copies of paintings from the Museo del Prado for the Museo del Pueblo, and later travelled around Spain with this project. After a series of events during the Civil War (apart from the personal side, he founded the magazine "Hora de España", of which he was to be the only cartoonist), he went to Mexico, where he was exiled until 1952, when he decided to return to Europe and spend a year travelling around Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome, before returning to Mexico. In 1956 he settled in the Italian capital, where he met up again with the great masters. In 1960 he finally returned to Spain: he visited the Prado Museum in Madrid and friends organised an exhibition for him. During this decade he made several trips to Spain, as well as setting up his studio in Barcelona, and also to Europe. His work could be seen in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Paris..., and his work has been recognised with outstanding mentions: Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 1985, opening of a museum dedicated to his work in Murcia in 1990, National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1997, etc. His creations are kept in important private collections (in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Rome, Paris, Murcia...) and prominent institutions, apart from the one dedicated exclusively to his figure, such as the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo Collection, the Fine Arts Museum in Murcia.
