Theodor Geisel Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1904 - d. 1991

Better known as Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel studied at Dartmouth College, where he served as editor-in-chief of their humor magazine. He briefly attended Oxford University in England but returned to America to pursue a career as a cartoonist. Geisel eventually landed in advertising, using his illustration art to promote Standard Oil. In 1937, after multiple rejections, he finally published his first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

Dozens of books would follow, featuring rhymes and Dr. Seuss drawings. These included classics like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. On the side, he was also a political cartoonist, speaking out against discrimination and social injustice. Today, you can find Dr. Seuss art for sale in galleries around the world and his books in every library. Dr. Seuss drawings and art prints are beloved by children and adults alike for their beautiful whimsy and the special memories they represent. Whether you adore classic children's art or edgy, contemporary illustrations, find the perfect drawings for sale at Invaluable to suit your living space.

Weary of the over-commercialization of Christmas and sensing that the meaning of the holiday was being lost in the wrappings and ribbons, boxes and bows, Ted Geisel sat down and wrote How The Grinch Stole Christmas! when he was 53 years old.

Dr. Seuss came up with the idea for The Grinch the day after Christmas when he looked in the mirror and saw a rather Grinch-ish look on his face. “Something had gone awfully wrong with Christmas or maybe with me,” he said. Weary of the over-commercialization of Christmas and sensing that the meaning of the holiday was being lost in the wrappings and ribbons, boxes and bows, Ted Geisel sat down and wrote How The Grinch Stole Christmas! when he was 53 years old.

Dr. Seuss once reminisced with his biographers about the verbal exchange between friends that accompanied their Dartmouth handshake: “When I went to college, it was a campy thing to say, ‘Oh, the places you’ll go! [to which the reply was] The people you’ll meet!’” That Roaring Twenties handshake exchange sent Ted on his way to a robust and rewarding career. In 1990, he chose those same words for his parting book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!. What a fitting tribute to the Dartmouth men—class of 1925—who befriended him early on and were a source of encouragement his entire life.
