    • J. GEISSLER (1822-1904), Hans and Grete, Ludwig Uhland, 1848, Pencil
      Aug. 26, 2023

      J. GEISSLER (1822-1904), Hans and Grete, Ludwig Uhland, 1848, Pencil

      Est: €900 - €1,200

Julius Geißler (1822 Göttingen - 1904 Hannover): Illustration for "Hans and Grete" by Ludwig Uhland, 1848, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower middle signed: "zur freundlichen Erinnerung J. Geissler". At the center dated: "Einbeck d. 25t August 1848.". Date: 1848 Description: In this drawing, Julius Geißler presents two figures that were very well-known in the 19th century: Hans and Grete from the poem of the same name by Ludwig Uhland: She: Do you always look where you find me? Take care of your little eyes, lest you go blind! He: If you didn't always look around, you wouldn't see me, take care of your little neck! You'll get it twisted It is an argumentative dialogue that the couple has with each other. The young man seems to have eyes only for the lady. She, on the other hand, with her back turned to him, seeks eye contact with the viewer. What is immediately noticeable is the different way in which the two figures are executed. While the woman is drawn with calm and soft lines, even to the point of blurring in pencil, the lines of the man are more restless and thus create an overall more robust impression. Added to this are the elements of clothing and hairstyle, such as the woman's hair plaited smoothly into a plait and the man's fur hat, which sits askew. All this suggests a different social background for the two young people, which could explain the turbulence of their mutual affection. This early work by the artist is today an interesting testimony to the popularity of Uhland's poems, which later lost much of their popularity. It is also possibly a poetic reminder of a lively encounter - which the dedication (to the kind memory of J. Geissler, the artist was 26 years old at the time) suggests, even if the person who received the gift is not known today. Keywords: Ludwig Uhland, poetry, Germany, literature, poetry, fairy tale, characters, portrait, illustration, 19th century, Romanticism, Costumes, Germany,
