Geissler. 1890" lower center Overall dimensions, framed: 53 x 44.5 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Paintings by Wilhelm Geissler serve as excellent contemporary documents on bourgeois life in Berlin around 1900 The present depiction of a winter afternoon in Berlin is a typical work by Wilhelm Geissler and was painted in 1890. The scenery is located at the Museum Insel and shows the Alte Nationalgalerie and the equestrian statue of Frederick William IV in the background. On the lower left side, the painter presents several pedestrians on the bridge above the Spree, watching the lively hustle of the gulls. The artist gives an interesting impression of the Berlin bourgeois and middle-class society at the end of the regency of the last German Emperor. The painting appears in good condition. There are only small framing marks visible. The work is signed and dated "Wilh. Geissler. 1890" lower center. The wooden frame is gilded and only shows small traces of wear. The framed painting measures 53 x 44.5 cm. The panel measures 35 x 26.7 cm. Wilhelm Geissler (1848-1928) Wilhelm Geissler initially followed his father and worked as an illustrator in Berlin. Between 1874 and 1876, he joined the Berlin Academy of Arts and became a regular participant at the annual exhibitions, since 1877. He shortly worked on fantastic paintings and humorous genre themes, before he concentrated on realistic plein air painting, around 1890. He soon became highly appreciated for his depictions of the Berlin life and since 1893, he exhibited at the Berlin Glass Palace. In the last years of his career, Geissler turned towards the popular genre of alpine painting. Geissler was not only a painter, but also active as drawing teacher. Later, he was appointed the first director of the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts in 1913. In summer 1918, he was honored by a great solo exhibition, held at the Berlin Künstlerhaus. Wilhem Geisslers works belong to many German private collections, today.
