    Das antike Theater von Taormina mit Blick auf den schneebedeckten Ätna. -- Öl auf Leinwand. 47,7 x 80,6 cm. Unten links signiert "O. Geleng". -- -- Der Berliner Landschaftsmaler Otto Geleng verbringt die Jahre 1862-63 zunächst in Rom, um sich dann ab 1863 in Taormina auf Sizilien niederzulassen. 1872-83 wird er sogar zum Bürgermeister der Stadt ernannt. Seine stimmungsvollen süditalienischen Landschaften und insbesonders seine Darstellungen von Taormina lösten einen ersten Touristenstrom nach Sizilien aus. Er war eng mit dem dreizehn Jahre jüngeren Pionier der künstlerischer Aktfotografie, Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931), befreundet. The Berlin-born artist Otto Geleng painted the famous ruins of the theatre, as well as many other motifs from the Sicilian town, numerous times since he moved to Taormina in 1863 and even became mayor of the town from 1872 to 1882.
