Johannes Gelert Classical Plaster Relief : A plaster relief by Johannes S Gelert (Danish 1852-1923) of a Classical scene of a warrior (Perseus?) holding Pegasus' snout. He is beseeched by a woman and an old man on the right and tempted by a goddess (likely Venus) on the left. Patinated brown to resemble bronze. Signed upper right J Gelert and dated 1915. Pencil signed on reverse with a dedication "from an old friend" dated May 28th 1916. Gelert was born in Demark but immigrated to the US, where he is best known for his works in the Chicago area. Provenancce: Robert A Goldstein; Charles A Whitaker Auction Co 6 Feb 2002. Size: plaque is 16" X 8.25" frame is 18.75" X 10.675". CONDITION: A couple slight abrasions to patinated surface, otherwise fine. Oak frame shows some wear.
