The small Polish town of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is about 33 km from Krakow and famous for its extensive pilgrimage complex. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Poland and its Calvary trail is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The history of the pilgrimage site dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, when the then voivode of Krakow, Mikolaj Zebrzydowski, had a monastery and a Calvary trail built there after the Jerusalem model.

Geller' lower right Framed with mount Dimensions, framed: 41.5 x 52 cm Good condition Provenance: Bavarian private collection Johann Nepomuk Geller's favorite subjects were market scenes - his watercolours fetch up to more than 8,000 Euros at international auctions This pastel and watercolour drawing by the Austrian painter Johann Nepomuk Geller shows a busy market square with market-women, a typical subject matter for the artist. Impressionist brush stokes give shape to the figures, the produce and the surroundings. During his lifetime Geller painted a myriad of similar scenes in different techniques. The drawing by Johann Nepomuk Geller is in good condition with only light signs of age and use. There are visible framing marks along the margins. The paper is mounted on cardboard, which is inscribed by an unknown hand on the back. On the lower right the work is signed 'Joh. Nep. Geller'. Framed it measures 41.5 x 52 cm. The drawing measures 16.4 x 27.1 cm. Johann Nepomuk Geller Johann Nepomuk Geller was born in Vienna. In 1876 he started studying painting at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl. But financial distress forced him to work as a chromolithographer. He continued to paint mainly in Wachau in Lower Austria, where he created many of his popular market scenes. Later Geller continued his studies at the academy and attended a school for landscape painting under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. He was a co-founder of the Hagenbund in 1900, one of the largest and most progressive groups of artists at the time. Geller was well travelled, having visited France, Italy and Eastern Europe and was awarded many prizes.
