Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner Michael Gemmell is best known for his abstracted landscapes, lively, very well-made works with a bold sense of colour and tonal contrast. In some respects, they recall the Cubist approach of such earlier painters as George Campbell and Arthur Armstrong. His methodology frees him from the restriction of a single viewpoint, allowing a more complex representation of a scene. Though first and foremost a painter, he also has considerable experience in interior design and a number of related skills, all of which inform his painting.

    Michael Gemmell (b.1950) HARBOUR oil on canvas signed lower right 69 by 69cm., 27 by 27in. Born in Coleraine, Co. Derry, Gemmell studied at the National College of Art in Dublin from 1966 to 1968 and at the College of Art in Limerick from 1971 to 1972. The artist has described his work as a 'bird's eye view 'of the landscapes that appeal to him, namely, the Irish bog land, the Burren and the islands of the West. Gemmell's interpretation of these terrains embodies a delicate balance between the representational and the abstract. He is represented in the collections of the OPW and Bank of Ireland among others and has exhibited regularly at the RHA and with the Kennedy Gallery, Davis Gallery, and the Waldock Gallery.
