      • ABRAHAM GENOELS (1640-1723) (TO BE ATTRIBUTED TO)
        Oct. 03, 2023

ABRAHAM GENOELS (1640-1723) (TO BE ATTRIBUTED TO)

        Est: €600 - €800

River landscape with a farmhouse in the background. Pen in brown (gallnut ink?), brush in gray, gray wash. Framing lines in pen in brown. Collector's mark at lower left 'VH' (L.2516) for Joseph van Haecken. No watermark. Provenance: Joseph van Haecken, London (L.2526) Private collection, Heverlee This fine drawing depicts a peaceful river landscape with leafy groups of trees on either side. Through shading and deliberately untouched areas in which the paper is left blanc, Genoels creates a delicate reflection of the light on the water surface. Like many other Antwerp artists, Genoels spend much time abroad including about ten years in Paris (1659-69) where he worked for the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins. Later, in 1674 he settled in Rome until 1682. There he was a member of the 'Bentveugels' and is nicknamed 'Archimedes' after the Greek mathematician. A comparable landscape was sold at Sotheby's, London, 8.12.2005, lot 26 (cf. RKDimages 116608). Also the KBR houses a fine pen drawing by his hand.¹ Description FR Paysage fluvial avec un batîment avec tour à l'arrière-plan. Pen in bruin (galnoteninkt?), penseel in grijs, grijs gewassen. Kaderlijnen in pen in bruin.

Abraham Genoels - Rare Contre Epreuve - Pendant A

        Est: €380 - €460

Landscape with two women sitting along a river in the centre, classical temple to the left and trees and mountains in the background. Contre-Epreuve etching 1676 ---- Explanation contre-epreuve : When you have printed an engraving g for the first time, the engraver/printer can lay another paper on the wet ink engraving and press it once again. Now you've got the engraving in reverse like the original copperplate or drawing. This allows the artist to make changes in the plate if necessary. There are only o a few contre-epreuves needed for this process so therefore they are very rare and very near close to the creative work by the artist. --- The British Museum holds an impression 'After retouching' but the absence of an image makes it impossible to compare. This print (Holstein 25) is a pendant of Holstein 26, also offered as previous lot in this auction
