ARNOLD GENTHE, Apollo Temple of Corinth, 1929-30, 12.5x9.5" gelatin silver print, Printed c. 1930, signed and titled in pencil on mount recto below print: Arnold Genthe N.Y. / The Temple of Apollo of Corinth, inscribed in pencil on mount verso: P2 6, 24 A beautiful vintage print. arly in life, Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) wished to become an artist. However, the distinguished German painter Adolph Menzel, his mother's cousin, discouraged the youth from studying art. Hoping to instead pursue a teaching career like that of his father, Genthe entered the university in Jena. In 1895 he accepted an offer to tutor the young son of Baron F. Heinrich von Schroeder when the family moved to San Francisco. Thus began a new life for Genthe in America. Genthe's first photographs were made while in the employ of the von Schroeders to illustrate his letters home. With a hand-held camera fitted with a Zeiss lens, he wandered the streets of San Francisco. Like other amateurs, he soon joined the city's camera club to gain access to better equipment and the use of a studio for portraiture. Although he began as an amateur, Genthe soon moved into professional work. He exhibited with art photographers and published his photographs in books and popular magazines. Genthe opened his first portrait photography studio in San Francisco in 1898 and became very active in the city's cultural and social milieu. Even when the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906 destroyed Genthe's studio, equipment, books, and art collection, he used a borrowed camera to document the events as they unfolded. Undaunted, Genthe soon opened another studio and began experiments with the new autochrome color process. By 1911 Genthe had cemented his reputation as "dean of idealistic impressionism on the west coast," in the words of colleague Annie Brigman. In that year he left San Francisco for new opportunities in New York. As in San Francisco, Genthe's considerable erudition and savoir faire afforded him access to New York's most important personalities and visiting luminaries. From the 1910s through the 1930s, he thrived as a professional portrait photographer. Genthe enhanced his national reputation by publishing photographs in books on San Francisco's Chinatown (1908), New Orleans (1926), and the dance (1916 and 1929). Heading: (Pictorialism) Author: Genthe, Arnold Title: The Book of the Dance Place Published: New York Publisher:Mitchell Kennerley Date Published: [1916] Description: With over 100 half-tones from photographs by Arnold Genthe in b&w and 6 in color illustrating all schools of the Dance. 26.3x18 cm (10¼x7"), original green cloth lettered in gilt with a gilt cover vignette of a dancer. First Edition. Includes images of Isadora Duncan, Anna Pavlova, Ruth St. Denis, and other notable dancers of the period. In his Foreward, Genthe states "When I decided to publish in book form the pictures of the dance which I made during the last few years, my object was not to make a book of personalities. I merely wanted to show some of the phases of modern dance tendencies that could be recorded in a pictorially interesting manner. This, therefore, is meant to be just a picture book, permanently recording something of the fugitive charm of rhythmic motion, significant gesture and brilliant color which the dance has once more brought into our lives.

Arnold Genthe, Girl and sunflower. Autochrome, 6 x 8 - inches, in a diascope, ca. 1910 - 1920. This is the final plate in John Wood's great book "The Art of the Autochrome: The Birth of Color Photography" [University of Iowa Press, 1993.] At the time of writing the maker was unknown, but Wood afterwards discovered a variant in the Library on Congress Genthe Collection. Wood's note includes, "There are few portraits in this book any more beautiful than this one. It is a masterful work, a great autochrome in every respect." You can find this illustrated on line along with a number of other beautiful ones in the Luminous Lint theme of autochromes - http://www.luminous-lint.com/app/vexhibit/_THEME_Autochromes_Art_01/6/10/30241089826830053729/ . The diascope is a wonderful cased viewer in which to see a back-lit autochrome reflected in a mirror. Like daguerreotypes, each autochrome is unique. This is a wonderful example.
