      GEORG GERLACH (1874-1962) Monte-Carlo, 1926 Gouache on paper 35 x 50 cm, signed and datet lowr left. Provenance : Private collection, Belgium. Austrian impressionist painter of portraits, landscapes and still lifes, born in Berlin, he studied at the Institute for Graphic Education and Research in Vienna. After private painting lessons, Gerlach then perfected his skills at the Academies of Fine Arts in Vienna and Munich. Gerlach undertakes several study trips to Germany, Italy and France from where he brings back impressionist landscapes. During the First World War, he worked as a war painter, mainly on the Italian front.

Cyclamen, rhododendrons and other flowers amidst lush exotic foliage are rendered with broad brushstrokes. In the background the glass walls of a palm house can be discerned. Around the turn of the century two large greenhouses were erected in Vienna. The strong color palette and the dynamic brushwork endow the painting with vitality. In addition to his atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes Gerlach created numerous floral still lifes of this kind. The painting is in good condition. The edges of the board are bumped in some parts. The work is unframed. It is signed lower right ‘G. Gerlach’. The artist's board measures 45.5 x 60.5 cm.       The boxer Erich Brandl. Circa 1925. Vintage gelatin silver print. 22,7 x 17 cm. Mounted to original studio card (water stain in lower right corner and slightly soiled), photographer's name printed and sitter's name written in ink below the image on the mount. A bronze statue of the boxer Erich Brandl was cast in 1925 by René Sintenis and the photographer Frieda Riess took a very atmospheric nude of him in the same year.
