Jean-Léon Gérôme Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Sculptor, Etcher, b. 1824 - d. 1904

Artist Jean-Leon Gerome was a French painter from the 1840s until century’s end. He produced an array of artwork, including portraits, and painted images pertaining to Greek mythology, Roman history, and exotic Middle Eastern architecture and locales. Jean-Leon Gerome's paintings fall under the Academicism school, extending the neoclassical movement into photographic realism and meticulous detail.

Artist Jean-Leon Gerome was a member of the Institut de France, an officer in Legion d'honneur, and an honorary member of the British Royal Academy. He became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1864, holding the post for 39 years. He had great influence over other French painters, although he opposed the nontraditional styling of the Impressionists.

Indeed, the present work recalls a number of head studies by Gérôme, including a similar figure of an old man which sold at Lombrail-Teucquam, Drouot- Richelieu, on 29 November 2000, as lot 63.

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French academic painter and sculptor known for his historical and orientalist works. Here are key points about Jean-Léon Gérôme:1. **Early Life and Training:** Jean-Léon Gérôme was born on May 11, 1824, in Vesoul, France. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the neoclassical painter Paul Delaroche.2. **Academic Style:** Gérôme became associated with academic art, which adhered to traditional techniques and often focused on historical or classical themes. He gained recognition for his meticulous attention to detail and technical skill.3. **Orientalist Works:** Gérôme was renowned for his Orientalist paintings, which depicted scenes from North Africa, the Middle East, and the Ottoman Empire. These works often featured exotic and detailed depictions of customs, architecture, and daily life in these regions.4. **Historical and Mythological Paintings:** In addition to Orientalist themes, Gérôme painted historical and mythological scenes. His works often showcased a blend of academic precision and narrative storytelling.5. **Salon Success:** Gérôme regularly exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon, where his paintings received acclaim. He won numerous awards, including the Medal of Honor.6. **Travels:** Gérôme traveled extensively, including trips to Egypt and the Middle East. His travels influenced his art, and he drew inspiration from the cultures and landscapes he encountered.7. **Interest in Archaeology:** Gérôme had a keen interest in archaeology, and he sometimes incorporated archaeological details into his paintings. He was involved in the exploration and documentation of ancient sites.8. **Sculpture:** While Gérôme was primarily a painter, he also created sculptures. One of his notable works is the statue "Pygmalion and Galatea."9. **Teaching Career:** Gérôme served as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he influenced a generation of artists. His academic approach to art was both admired and criticized by later generations of artists.10. **Late 19th-Century Art:** Gérôme's career spanned a crucial period in the transition from academic art to more avant-garde movements. While his works were popular during his lifetime, they faced criticism from emerging modernist artists.11. **Death:** Jean-Léon Gérôme passed away on January 10, 1904, in Paris.12. **Legacy:** Gérôme's legacy is complex. While he was celebrated in his time and played a significant role in the academic art scene, his reputation diminished with the rise of modernism. However, there has been a renewed interest in his work in recent decades, with scholars reevaluating his contributions to art history.Jean-Léon Gérôme's paintings and sculptures continue to be studied for their technical mastery and the insight they provide into 19th-century academic art and Orientalist themes. Estimation 150 000 - 200 000 €
