John Emmett Gerrity Art for Sale at Auction

John Emmett Gerrity, (American 1895-1980), was born in Los Altos, California in 1895. In 1919 he began studying art on his own, and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. By 1926 Gerrity was teaching art from his home studio in Berkeley, CA. Beginning around the same time Gerrity began correspondence with the father is synchromism, Stanton Macdonald Wright. (Gerrity was the foremost exponent of Synchromism in the San Francisco Bay Area). Gerrity's work was frequently included in the Annual San Francisco Art Association Exhibitions from 1927 to 1931. In 1929 Gerrity was designated director of the San Francisco branch of the Los Angeles Art Students' League. In 1932 Gerrity had the first of two one-man shows at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the second took a place in 1955. Gerrity completed several WPA mural projects, including his mural 'Inventions of Man' at the San Francisco State Teachers College. Gerrity continued to work and exhibit his work through the 1970s. He passed away in Walnut Creek, California in 1980.
