Henri Gervex, French 1852-1929- Study of a figure in Classical dress, standing in a rocky landscape and holding an amphora and a phiale; oil on canvas, signed 'H. Gervex' (lower left), 27.2 x 21.9 cm. Note: Henri Gervex worked in the atelier of Pierre-Nicolas Brisset (1810-1890) before studying under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) at the École des Beaux-Arts, and later becoming an apprentice to Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876). Gervex produced a number of mythological scenes, typically depicting loosely-painted nudes in wooded or rocky landscapes, much like the present work.

The present work is an authors copy of Rolla, painted in 1878 based on the romantic novel of the same name by Alfred de Musset, the artists most famous work and an icon of late nineteenth century French art. Now located in the collection of the Musee des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux, Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, France. Here Gervex faithfully reprises the detail and palette of the monumental original, with only very minor changes. Provenance: The original painting Rolla was sold at Sothebys, London, 19th Century European Paintings, 25 May 2016, lot 6. The painting illustrates one of the scenes of the romantic poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset 1833. Originally admitted to the 1878 Paris Salon, the painting was excluded from it before the exhibition opened to the public on grounds of immorality and obscenity. Henri Gervex was a French painter who studied painting under Alexandre Cabanel, Pierre Nicolas Brisset, and Eugène Fromentin. Gervex h: 113 w: 70 cm Provenance : Offert par l'artiste aux parents du modèle ; Puis par descendance ; Vente Pierre Bergé, Drouot, 20 décembre 2013, n°231 ; Acquis lors de cette vente par l'actuelle propriétaire ; Collection particulière, Paris Expositions : Quatrième exposition de la Société des pastellistes Français, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 1888, n°47 Commentaire : Notre pastel représente la jeune Cécile Cazet, fille d'Alphonse Cazet, agent de change, et de Marie Lagarde. Il est fort probable que l'artiste rencontra la famille Cazet par le biais de Pierre Lagarde, frère de Marie, également peintre et pastelliste dont l'amitié avec Gervex est attestée en 1885 et qui exposa au sein des expositions de la Société des pastellistes français à partir de 1892. Notre portrait, offert directement par l'artiste aux parents du modèle, fut présenté à la quatrième exposition de la Société des pastellistes français en 1888, preuve de l'attachement et surtout de la fierté de Gervex à montrer ce pastel durant ce qui constitue le grand rendez-vous des spécialistes du genre. La jeune fille est représentée tenant fermement son cerceau, le regard ingénu, empreint d'une mélancolie déjà adulte. Notre pastel révèle encore la parfaite maitrise de cette technique par notre artiste. Jouant sur les réserves, sur le gras du crayon, il rend merveilleusement les volumes et les matières et nous offre une œuvre d'une rare sensibilité, sans doute l'un de ses plus beaux portraits au pastel. Estimation 10 000 - 15 000 €

ELEGANTE DAME AM KLAVIER Öl auf Leinwand. 160 x 63 cm. Mittig unten signiert „H. Gervex“. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. In einem Innenraum vor beige-brauner Wand nach rechts sitzend eine junge Frau in einem langen, glänzend weißen Seidendamastkleid mit reicher drapierter Faltenlegung. Sie hat langes dunkles Haar, das mit einer Schleife gebunden ist, den Kopf und ihren Blick leicht gesenkt, um sich ganz auf das Spiel auf dem vor ihr stehenden Klavier, das ein Notenblatt aufweist, zu konzentrieren. Etude de Louis XVI pour l'oeuvre " La fausse légende de Louis XVI et Parmentier luttant contre la famine ". Usures et tâches d'humidité Dimensions : 37,5 x 28 cm Peintre et pastelliste né à Montmartre, Henri Gervex débute dès l’âge de 15 ans dans l’atelier de Pierre-Nicolas Brisset. En 1871, il est reçu à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris dans l’atelier d'Alexandre Cabanel où il suit son enseignement pendant cinq ans. Il y est le condisciple de Jean-Louis Forain et Fernand Cormon et poursuit aussi son apprentissage auprès du peintre orientaliste Eugène Fromentin. En 1876, il fait la connaissance d'Édouard Manet et fréquente les peintres impressionnistes, sa peinture en subit l’influence et il éclaircit sa palette. Il effectue ensuite de nombreux voyages, en Espagne avec Meissonier et en Angleterre avec Rodin, en Russie, en Italie et même en Turquie.
