            • Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Senggarang - Hijau Series, 1999
              Dec. 08, 2024

              Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Senggarang - Hijau Series, 1999

              Est: RM110,000 - RM180,000

Executed in 1999, Senggarang reveals Yusof Ghani's perception of the natural world, exemplified through the harmony of colours. Powerful swaths of exuberant brushwork were applied with force across the canvas in sweeping motions, ardently capturing the spiritual ambience of land, water, and luxuriant vegetation. Details such as the intense, diagonal strokes in the foreground in rich shades of red were integrated with delicate hilly terrains to create a profound sense of depth and grandeur. The artist's paintings in the Hijau Series are distinguished by lyrical gestures, nuances of light and dark, and intricate structures accented by hints of green - a colour of hope, peace, and regeneration. The Hijau Series conceived in 1998 marked a captivating shift from the figurative towards addressing the importance of nature and man's duty to preserve it, leading to the fervent exploration of new forms revealing the interconnectedness of our world and exudes the poetic sentiment of belonging to a larger entity. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). Then he got a scholarship to study for his BFA at the George Mason University in the United States (1981), and MFA at the Catholic University in Washington, USA (1983). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti ITM with the rank of Associate Professor, but unleashed some of the most memorable art series: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. He singlehandedly organised the Shah Alam Biennale involving artists from 15 countries in 2016. Yusof Ghani made his London foray with an exhibition, Segerak VI - Transcendent Figures, at the Asia House in early April 2017. Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers with partners Galeri Prima and Pinkguy Gallery organised Segerak VIII: Utopia, the final edition of Segerak series, in August 2019. The exhibition received good responses.

              Est: RM40,000 - RM60,000

In Hijau Series, Yusof Ghani embarked on a journey to explore the forms of nature, by recording and translating his experiences onto the canvas. Est: RM18,000 - RM28,000

Ombak should not be taken in its literal meaning as 'Waves' but a soothing spiritual seance of painting through one's emotional wavelength. The series was first unveiled in the exhibition, Ombak: Breath Of Life at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery in 2014. Yusof Ghani conveyed the impressions of the movements of waves in Ombak Series 'Lipe', painted with bold, forceful brushstrokes and dynamic colouring. Est: RM3,500 - RM6,000

The use of form and light to depict positive movements and energy are characteristic of Segerak. The artist uses expressive lines and light colour tones to give focus to the contours of the body. He delves into progress, enlightenment, and focuses on what should always be the anchor of future developments - tradition and culture. Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Segerak VII - Heroic, 2017

              Est: RM38,000 - RM58,000

Segerak sees Yusof Ghani's inexorable return to non-obvious full figuration and this is nearing the last tranche, ending in 2019. The figure-types resemble Tari, except they are not dancing, but are facing unknown challenges and strife which are related to the art of survival. As he intoned: "Segerak has allowed me to explore the human figure as a symbol of life, which I transform into abstract statements to depict humanity's contrasting realities of struggle and victory, aggression and celebration, realism and fantasy." Segerak actually spanned 17 years! Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). • Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Rainforest (Topeng Series), 1996
              Dec. 08, 2024

Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Rainforest (Topeng Series), 1996

              Est: RM17,000 - RM27,000

Rainforest is a painting on paper which derives from Topeng Series - its motif has been simplified into gestural lines contained in a powerful composition - the surface is densely wrought in red, blue, yellow and white. Each forceful stroke binds the interlocking shades together, preventing the vibrant colours from exploding. Topeng (Mask) Series by Yusof Ghani was conceived after an inspirational trip to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991 where he was captivated by the mask rituals of ethnic Kenyah and Kayan whose villages are located two hours outside the city of Kuching. The idea to explore deeper into the mystical and mysterious world of masks first transpired upon his frequent visits to the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur. In an interview with Rusli Hashim, Yusof Ghani has responded to a question pertaining the use of Topeng as a representation of the search for a Malaysian identity: "I used masks for my comments on we human tend to wear masks to portray to people a desirable us and hide our true selves behind them. Hypocrisy of sort but not necessarily for evil reasons. Maybe a question of identity. Maybe we wear different masks for different reasons. Like being the live-wire among friends, no-nonsense type to our spouses, and perhaps for some, the great-romantics to their secret lovers, and so on. Touching on the issue of Malaysian identity, that's the least of the reason on my developing the Topeng Series paintings even though I thought the motif was also interesting in making a cultural statement. Whilst formalistically I'm an abstract expressionist painter influenced greatly by the works of de Kooning, my professor Tom Nakashima at Catholic University in Washington DC kept reminding me that I cannot run away from the fact that I'm still Asian. It's painted all over - the choice of colours, the brush works and whatever." Yusof Ghani was awarded a scholarship to study at George Mason University, USA. He graduated with a BFA (Graphic Art) in 1981 and pursued his MFA (Fine Art) at Catholic University in Washington in 1983. Before his American studies, he had worked as an artist-illustrator (Agriculture Ministry, 1967), an instructor (Fisheries Institute, Penang, 1971) and a graphic artist (RTM, 1977). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti Mara Institute of Technology with the rank of Associate Professor, but unleashed some of the most memorable art series: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. Highly expressive and unique, Yusof Ghani illustrates the power and elements of masks using bold dynamic colours and tactile lines. While some may look at Balinese masks, Yusof Ghani's source is closer home, the Kenyah and Kayan masks (hudoq), with talismanic and curative properties. This was triggered by a visit to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991. There is another aspect or phase to his Topeng, and that started after his South African visit in 1994. Against a background of natural hues, the lyrical abstraction of figures denotes the liberation from the figurative, rapidly transformed into a celebratory fusion of organic forms. How many figures do you see, and what are they doing? This Tari Series from the second tranche betrays a more static demeanour as can be gleaned from the more glacial strokes and sinuous lumps of undefined forms like locked in some form of entanglement. The figures are clustered in the centre facing viewer, while a passage on the left stands forlorn. Yusof Ghani's figures, erstwhile camouflaged and bandaged, were accentuated in subdued and contrasting tones, exuding a certain tension. Yusof Ghani's incipient Tari starting in 1983 when studying in Catholic University, culminated in his solo exhibition at GaleriCitra, Kuala Lumpur, in 1989. Segerak sees Yusof Ghani's inexorable return to non-obvious full figuration and this is the last tranche, ending in 2019. The figure-types resemble Tari, except they are not dancing, but are facing unknown challenges and strife which are related to the art of survival. Thus, one senses more aggression than celebration. And there's more chaos than leisurely rhythm. A rare and early work from the series, Topeng 1 consists of 9 pieces arranged into three rows. The artist's exploration and mastery of forms and gestures is evident, as he synthesised the image of the mask with abstraction. It's more diabolical for one to plot alone than to conspire with others, where one is vulnerable to betrayal. Then again, everyone is one's own worse enemy. Hero or villain, it all depends on the character of the wearer. In the end, the most Machiavellian will get all the spoils. Wearing mask conceals one's intention though in ritual dances, the persona of the mask worn would manifest the seance drama until it's over. Yusof Ghani's Topeng started innocuously enough after a group trip with students to Sarawak, where he was fascinated by the masks of the Kayan and the Kenyah tribes. It got more grotesque visages after a visit to South Africa in 1994.

A phalanx of heads stands like ancestral guardians reminiscent of the moai megaliths of Easter Islands, although the Topeng Series was inspired by Yusof Ghani's group trip with students to Sarawak where he was fascinated by the rituals of the Dayak masks (hudoq) of the Kayan and the Kenyah, of which the intrinsic value is to protect against evil spirits. They get an emotive and symbolic quality when rendered as grimaces concealing real intentions. Yusof Ghani had even shown his Topeng at the Takashimaya Gallery in Singapore, and at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco in 1997.

              Est: RM65,000 - RM100,000

Biring, which manifests the practice of cock-fighting (berlaga ayam), is all about aggression and violence, between two contenders, out for the kill as the spurs are fitted with gaffs or sometimes laced with poison. Though a one-to-one combat, the trajectory of movement depicted is circular with the thrust of striking at the most vulnerable point of the adversary. Once pushed into the ring (wantilan), it's a survival do-or-die game. Even if one gets cold feet and wants to escape, there is no way out but to confront the adversary with all its might. Biring was first unveiled at the Wei-Ling Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in March 2007. Though cockerels are the protagonists, the moral lesson is applicable to Man or even countries.

This is a rare masterpiece of absolute quality. In Tari Series known for complex but discernible figures interacting in sinuous movements, a phalanx of boxy barriers offers a restraining element to the central blob of red and the more ambiguous goings-on in the peripheral white spaces. It comes from the first tranche starting in 1985, actually earlier since when he was studying at the Catholic University in Washington in 1983. It looks unusually more like an obstacle course of enmeshed forms circumscribed somewhat by an open L-shaped perimeter, and with the white forms more fragmentary. The first Tari Series exhibition was unveiled at Galeri Citra, Kuala Lumpur, in 1989. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. Yusof Ghani’s paintings, according to many, have shifted from something dark and mysterious to take the air of something cheery and elegant. However, the artist himself said that his social commentaries did not change despite the change of atmosphere. It still had social remarks. He also said life is a bit like the lives of humans. Purposeless and unorchestrated at times, but it brings a lot of pleasure. This social commentary was brought to canvas, based on his studies on human behaviour teamed with lines, colours and motion. The end-result of a seamless flow of lovely colours amalgamating with one another was not intentionally meant to look aesthetic and flowing. The initial lines and sketches were rough, chaotic and arbitrary, to portray the human behaviour of being wild and free.

Yusof Ghani’s ‘Biring’ series strays away from his other series that feature the human form, masks and nature. His most coveted works are from the rare, ‘Protest’ series while the artists’ most recognised and collected artworks are part of the ‘Tari’ series. The ‘Biring’ series is the artist’s rendition of a cock-fight, symbolising the heroism and strife between mankind. The use of vibrant hues and expressive brush strokes makes it an inundating artwork. Instead of Yusof’s usual vibrant colours of blue, he employed an earthy palette with this work, paired with Yusof’s innate prowess, he creates swirls of colours that finally take the form of roosters at the centre of the artwork. The roosters depicted in his painting seem to be in motion, wings flapping about as they fight for their lives. Biring’ is definitely one of Yusof Ghani’s most enlightened body of works, for not only have the works been painted with wild abandon and freedom, but more importantly demonstrate the artist’s ability to leave the comfort of the familiar.

Inspired by the masks of Kenyah and Kayan from his trip to Sarawak, the cultural motifs played a major part in Yusof Ghani’s Siri Topeng. The figure, seen as a formative generator and embodiment of movement is radically altered by Yusof Ghani. He dismantles and transforms them into planes of colour and curving lines. It merely is an expression of faces, combining oil on canvas in controlled structures, intensified by outlines, showing the artist’s effort in exploring new forms and visual approaches that are solid, structured and meaningful.

Characterized by bold strokes and vibrant colors, these paintings evoke the energy and fluidity of dance. He delves deep into the subject matters of cultural, social, and political scenes in Malaysia, incorporating tremendous dynamism in his paintings through vibrant color palettes, vigorous brushstrokes, and layered textures. Yusof’s notable “Topeng” series is inspired by traditional Sarawak tribal cultures. He took masks as motifs in paintings to explore human emotions and circumstances. The present lot, dynamic and energetic in its turbulent style, is a pair to Topeng Wang – Jugra I. With a reverence for nature, it recognizes the presence of the Divine in all creatures, seeing humans as a mirror reflection. The red-white dichotomous composition is visually striking and demonstrates Yusof’s critical thinking about the inseparability of humans and nature. His abstract expressionist works are considered one of the best around.

The Topeng series came about when Yusof Ghani paid a visit to Sarawak. It was here that he discovered the ethnic Kayan and Kenyah tribes wore ceremonial masks to cure illnesses, especially during ceremonial rituals. This gave him insight into the spiritual life of the people there, and consequently gave him inspiration for the series. It was said that he began to paint what he saw as the cure to his own state of spiritual illness, having doubted whether his works reflected his true self, or merely an adopted persona. As such, both the paintings and the masks hinted at something: the bolder and the more grotesque the masks, the more powerful they become – and the more they heal. Perhaps, this was a form of the artist dealing with his own personal demons at the time. Yusof Ghani was born in 1950 in Johor and used to frequent a small movie theater as a young boy, where he developed a predisposition towards painting. It is disordered, aggressive and he expresses this extraordinarily well with harsh brushstrokes, demonstrating the tension, chaos and hostility of this act as the roosters fight valiantly for their lives. The artist manages to create motion in this scene, as the audience can imagine feathers and wings beating around in fast motion. Biring departs from Yusof Ghani’s paintings of masks, forms and nature as he concentrates on cockfighting, using it as a symbol of courage and conflict among man.
