      • ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (BRUGES 1520-1590 LONDON)
        May. 10, 2022

ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (BRUGES 1520-1590 LONDON)

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (BRUGES 1520-1590 LONDON) ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (BRUGES 1520-1590 LONDON) Portrait of a Lady, said to be Arabella Stuart, c. 1605 oil on panel, mounted on canvas 93 x 75 cm ( 36 5/8 x 29 1/2 in) The present lot can be attributed on stylistic and material grounds to the circle of the Antwerp-born painter Marcus Gheerhaerts, active as a portraitist at the Elizabethan court. Gheerhaerts very rarely signed any of his works and employed a large workshop. His style resembles that of contemporaries such as John de Critz (1551-1642), Robert Peake the Elder (c. 1551-1619), and Paul van Somer (c. 1577-1621). The present portrait may represent Lady Arabella Stuart (for comparable examples, see portraits in the National Trust and Royal Collection). The sitter is depicted wearing a woman’s jacket typical for the period 1600-1610 richly embroidered with floriated motifs of pomegranate and peas and sweat-pea flowers, traditional symbols of fecundity. The ‘bee-hive’ hair and elegant lace corroborate a dating of around 1605.

Marcus Gheeraerts (1516-1590), Avium Vivae Icones - Set of 11

        Est: €1,500 - €2,500

A set of 11 engravings together in a small booklet. From a very rare series of of twelve plates (Hollstein 33-44) designed by Marcus Gheeraerts I. Six of the design drawings by Marcus Gheeraerts I, are in the British Museum, I added an image of one of the drawings for reference only. Present are plates 2 to 10, the title added in front is from another series 'Animalium Quadrupedum' with the publishers address of F. de Widt and date 1631. The homogeen set showing several birds on each plate are good impressions with nice plate tone. They bear the publishers address of Joannes Galle. In this state the name of the birds is added in latin above them. The first state was published by Philips Galle (date 1547-1590 given by the Rijksmuseum who holds one of the prints RP-P-1963-180)
