Harry Phelan Gibb,  British 1870-1948 -  Floral still life with green apples, 1930 (with 'Urban scene' on the reverse);  oil on board, signed and dated lower left 'Phelan Gibb 1930', 68.8 x 63.8 cm  Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson (1939-2019)  Note:  a memory of Reverend John Watson from Ted Few,  I first met John Watson at the Olympia Winter Antiques Fair in 1994. I was wondering how to make my wares more appealing to the disappointing trickle of visitors when I became aware of a pensive, engaged man making a thorough examination of the stand before settling on a patinated plaster bust of a woman by Hamo Thornycroft which had come from the collection of Siegfried Sassoon at Heytesbury Manor. After a while we exchanged a few words and then he took his leave.  The next afternoon he returned, had another cursory look at the rest of the stand, and then began to ask me very informed questions about the bust. I couldn't make him out. Was he an academic? He certainly knew his stuff. A prospective purchaser? His attire gave nothing away. He seemed slightly unworldly - not remotely acquisitive. And then once again he thanked me and left.  When he returned the following day I thought he was frankly either mad or deadly serious, but as he handed me a cheque my curiosity was assuaged. Thus began a relationship which lasted a quarter of a century and grew in scope and interest. He had, in that first interaction, demonstrated so many of his essential characteristics. He was quiet, thoughtful, thorough, curious, enthusiastic, prudent, unassuming and educated; a man of enormous integrity and kindness with a sense of humour to boot.  I learned that during his ministry he had bought pictures and sculpture from several of the top West End dealers but when he retired he was free to indulge his passion far more widely, buying initially from dealers, then additionally at auction and latterly extending his sphere of interest to global Works of Art, and even Modernism. He had an inbuilt radar which steered him towards the unusual, and a natural attraction for works of the finest quality, not to mention a nose for anything secondary or specious. And his passion for the New Sculpture Movement exemplified these preferences. It is a privilege to have been invited to advise his family and a pleasure to be working with Roseberys once again, dispersing the unique collection of a much missed collector and friend via a favourite saleroom which espouses so many of his values.

Phelan Gibb (Henry William, 1870-1948). Still Life with Flowers, circa 1946, oil on canvas * Phelan Gibb (Henry William, 1870-1948). Still Life with Bowls and Vases of Flowers, circa 1946, oil on canvas, signed ‘Phelan Gibb’ lower left, 50.7 x 61cm (20 1/8 x 24 ins), in an Italian wooden frame, with a label verso typewritten 'Lent by Lucy Werthheim', frame 59.5 x 69 cm QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Lucy Wertheim; Michael Dawson; Derwent Wise; Collection of Michael and Megan Dawson. According to the handwritten note added to the typewritten label to verso this painting was offered to Derwent Wise by Michael Dawson as security for a loan, the full text reads: 'Not as I remember it! As I recall, this picture was offered as security on a loan (of £5, I believe) at the time in the early 1950s when we were both students in Whitley Bay. When I came to redeem it several months later, Derwent claimed I had in fact sold it to him.... a view he maintained for over 50 years. Also - I didn't work in Lucy Wertheim's galley in Ashford, Derbyshire - I was introduced to her by a girlfriend who had worked there. Michael Dawson, 23 iv 05'. Harry Phelan Gibb was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, and studied in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Antwerp, and Munich before moving to Paris for 25 years up until the First World War. While there, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, and was included in the infamous Armory Show of Modern Art in New York, alongside Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp, and others. In the same year, he held a one-man show at the Bernheim Jeune gallery in Paris, and in Dublin in 1914 an important exhibition of his work was closed down on the eve of its opening due to the opposition at the Catholic Church to numerous studies of nudes included in it. He was rediscovered in the early 1930s by the art dealer Lucy Wertheim, who wrote in her autobiography Adventure in Art: 'The English artist still living whose work probably is of the most permanent value id Phelan Gibb. One day Phelan Gibb will doubtless come into his own, and his finest paintings take their place alongside examples of Manet, Cezanne, Picasso, Kolle and Christopher Wood in international exhibitions of Modern Art' (page 31).

Phelan Gibb (1870-1948) Lots 33-44A Property from the Estate of Lucy Wertheim (1882-1971) The following fourteen lots belonged to the well-known art dealer and collector, Lucy Wertheim, and have remained with her family by descent. Wertheim established her first gallery in Mayfair in 1930 after a decade of engagement with art, principally as a collector. She championed many young British artists, including Henry Moore, Cedric Morris and, in the year prior to his tragic early death, Christopher Wood. Through her career, she had galleries in Derbyshire, London and Brighton where she settled. She provided welcome support to many artists who we know well today. Among her protégés were Phelan Gibb and Kenneth Hall, whose work she retained as part of her personal collection. The Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne will be celebrating her life with a forthcoming exhibition 'Lucy Wertheim, Patron, Collector and Gallerist' in 2022. Harry Phelan Gibb (1870-1948)Coastal LandscapeOil on canvas, 51 x 76cm (20 x 30'')SignedExhibited: 'An Exhibition of 18th-20th Century Paintings', The Gorry Gallery, March 2007, Cat. No.65.Born in Northumberland to an Irish mother, Phelan Gibb went to Paris in the early 1900’s. He moved in the same circle as Picasso, Matisse and many of the Fauves, while Gertrude Stein was his friend and foremost patron. In 1909 Gibb became a Sociétaire of the Salon d'Automne and had a studio off Boulevard Raspail, where he taught Canadian artist Emily Carr. Gibb exhibited fourteen works in the 1913 Armory Show in New York, alongside artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Cézanne, Brancusi and Jack B. Yeats. Later that year Gibb was to replicate in Dublin a successful one man held at the Bernheim Jeune gallery in Paris. Organised by Count Casimir Markievicz and Oliver St. John Gogarty, the exhibition was closed by the police and his pictures were confiscated, no doubt deemed as blasphemous due to his tendency to paint nudes.Returning to England with the outbreak of the Great War, Gibb created his own pottery and continued to exhibit in London, while in 1926 he illustrates 1830, a French novel by surrealist Rene Crevel. Falling on hard times during the 1920's, he is noted as living in a house marked as 'Desolate' on an ordinance survey map. Gibb’s luck changes in 1931 when he meets art dealer Lucy Wertheim, who promotes artist called the “Twenties group” which included artists such as Christopher Wood, Norah Mc Guinness, Elizabeth Rivers, Kenneth Hall and Basil Rakoczi.Examples of Gibb’s work can be found at the Tate Britain, the Salford Museum, and the Towner Gallery as well as in the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand. His work was included in the very successful “Moderns” exhibition at IMMA Autumn 2010/Spring 2011 and later that year an exhibition of his work took place in The Pepper Canister Gallery, Dublin .
