      Full length, standing, wearing a red coat, his dog by his side Oil on canvas, in carved wood silver frame 183 by 81 cm.; 72 by 32 in. The sitter was the eldest son of John. 1st Earl Poulett and his wife Bridget, daughter of the Hon. Peregrine Bertie. He was called to the House of Lords in 1734 as Lord Hinton, and was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset from 1744 until 1764. On his death in 1764 he was succeeded by his brother, Vere. The Paulett family employed Gibson for a series of family portraits during the early eighteenth century. Gibson's portraits of John, 1st Earl Paulett, of Bridget his wife, and of Bridget his daughter were all sold at the Hinton House Sale in October, 1968.
