Mathilde Gießen began her artistic education in 1903 with the entrance to the painting school of Stoltenberg & Burmester in Kiel. On the recommendation of Burmester, she perfected her knowledge in 1906 by attending the Düsseldorf Art School under Adolf Schönnenbeck. Exciting excursions took her from here to Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. The impressions gained here did not remain without effect on her painterly work. - Since 1911 she worked in Stralsund as a freelance artist and drawing teacher at the local Hansa-College.
