Attributed to Charles Henry Gifford (1839-1904) American Coastal Scene Oil on Canvas Painting. Traces of a signature lower right. Charles Henry Gifford is well known for his works in water colors as is his oils and his pictures have found a ready sale, not only in all parts of the United States but in Europe. Charles Henry Gifford was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts July 13, 1839, the son of Benjamin R. and Betsey (Barstow) Gifford. His father was a ship carpenter. Young Gifford was educated in the public schools of the town. In his boyhood he could draw well and while yet a mere youth he gained admission to the art gallery connected with the music store of John Hopkins, on Union Street in New Bedford, where Albert Bierstadt, another famous artist, had one of his pictures on exhibition. The view stirred all the latent talent in young Gifford, and he told his mother he intended to be an artist. He was given some pennies with which he bought dry paints. Making his own brushes from hog bristles and hen feathers, he painted his first picture upon a piece of canvas of his own making.   Overall Size: 23 x 33 in. Sight Size: 13 1/2 x 23 in. #9094

Charles Henry Gifford (MA, 1839-1904), Sailboat, O/C

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Property of a Dataw Island, SC Estate Description: Charles Henry Gifford (MA, 1839-1904), Sailboat, Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, depicting a racing yacht in a regatta, the yacht flying the American flag and a bugee, with stamp verso from Hertz Art Galleries, Lawrence, NY, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 22 in. x 31 1/2 in. Born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Charles Henry Gifford was the son of a shipÕs carpenter. As a young man he showed no particular interest in becoming an artist, rather he was apprenticed to a boatbuilder and later worked as a shoemaker. It was not until 1864 and after serving in the Civil War that Gifford gave up shoemaking to become an artist. Two years later Gifford married Cordelia Palmer and the couple settled in Fairhaven. By 1868 he established a studio above a shop in New Bedford. GiffordÕs is known for his ability as a Luminist painter, which shows his concern for both subtle and dramatic effects of light, stillness, precise realism and softly glowing surfaces. Although Gifford received no formal training, he may have been familiar with local marine artists, Albert Bierstadt, Robert S. Gifford and William Bradford. (VoseGalleries.com) Measurements: Height: by sight 17 in. x Width: 26 in.
