Provenance: Derry & Toms Department Store, London. A very similar frieze panel designed by Walter Gilbert for the Derry & Toms Department Store, circa 1933, measuring 12 inches high by 72 inches high wide depicting stylized animals and foliate motifs was sold at Sotheby's, London, United Kingdom, November 16, 2006, lot 336, for £6,000. A gilt-bronze elevator screen designed by Walter Gilbert for the Derry & Toms building, circa 1929-31, depicting leaping deer and birds in flight centering a fountain was sold at Sotheby's, New York, June 7, 2002, lot 333, for $29,875. Derry & Toms was a department store located on Kensington High Street in London. Founded in 1860 by brothers-in-law Charles Derry and Joseph Toms it catered to the city's upper class. In 1930, construction was begun on a new, modern seven-story building designed by Bernard George. The modernized store re-opened for business in 1933. Its façade and interior were designed in the new and then-popular Art Deco style and featured metalwork by the English sculptor Walter Gilbert (1871-1946) as well as relief panels entitled Labor & Technology by Charles Henry Mabey Jr. In 1938, the store's famous Kensington Roof Gardens opened to the public. The store's main restaurant was located on the fifth floor and was called "The Rainbow Room." The name was likely inspired by the iconic club of the same name atop the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City, which had its grand opening in 1934. While Derry & Toms ceased to operate in 1973 the building and roof garden still exist today. C
