In his youth he spent summers on the Maine coast at Prout's Neck where he knew Winslow Homer and was one of the few artists to receive friendly criticism from the artist. Throughout his short career, due to an early death, he was active on the coast north of Portland, Maine. He was an influence on the artists of Boston and Pennsylvania during his lifetime. Though his work is rare because he was not a prolific artist, his paintings were discovered in the late 1990s in the old family home in Maine, where his descendents still live.

Evening alternatively titled Hungry Deer Approaching Near to Human Habitation Signed "W.W. Gilchrist" l.l., identified on an exhibition label (see below) on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 40 x 64 in. (101.7 x 162.6 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine. Exhibitions: Thirty-eighth Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture, Art Institute of Chicago, October 29-December 13, 1925. N.B. The Portland Museum of Art approaches the decision to deaccession objects from its permanent collection with the utmost caution in adherence to a strict collections management policy that reflects the standards of the American Association of Museums. The proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned works of art are used only for the acquisition of other works more relevant to the Museum's mission. This process allows the Museum to better care for what it retains while strengthening the collection with new acquisitions.
