        Jun. 20, 2024

LOUIS GLACKENS (1866-1933) Puck Magazine: "End of the Season."

        Est: $400 - $600

LOUIS GLACKENS (1866-1933) Puck Magazine: "End of the Season." Illustration for the initial cap on a satirical poem published in Puck magazine, May 18, 1904. Pen and ink on paper. 14 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Unsigned. This illustration depicts a famous American actor (called in the poem a "mummer") on a tour of England, having an audience with King Edward VII. It is possible that the actor was also modeled after an actual person. Louis Glackens was one of the most prolific and distinctive talents to contribute art to the New York City-based Puck Magazine. After his long run with Puck, he moved on to pioneering work in animation at the Barré and Bray studios. A particularly nice example of a publication-matched Glackens original.
