  • Jimi Gleason, (American, b.1961), Gajin's Light, 2006, acrylic on canvas, 76"H x 30"W.
    Nov. 07, 2020

    Jimi Gleason, (American, b.1961), Gajin's Light, 2006, acrylic on canvas, 76"H x 30"W.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Jimi Gleason (American, b.1961) Gajin's Light, 2006 acrylic on canvas Signed and dated verso. There is an approximately 13.5 inch light scratch to the surface of the painting extending in from the left edge slightly lower than center. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Patricia Faure Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. Excerpt from a biography from LewAllen Galleries: Gleason was raised near Newport Beach, California, and received his BA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. He then spent a brief period of study at the San Francisco Art Institute. Following an extended period in New York City, he returned to California and soon met Ed Moses, with whom he worked as a studio assistant for nearly seven years. Biography from Peter Blake Gallery Jimi Gleason has been exhibiting bold, reductive abstract paintings since the mid-80's and, using technical precision, works in the style of contemporary minimalism. He meticulously drags numerous gossamer layers of pearlescent acrylic paint down and across the canvas. In certain spots the paint is allowed to pool or smear in order to create an emulsive effect that grounds the painting in physical space. Yet each piece is intended to have a great deal of momentum and convey the feeling that the work is in constant flux. Gleason's color field images are painted with an assertive, luminous palette in a refractive medium. With the goal of drawing the viewer into active participation with the piece, he uses colors, textures, tones, melding and shifting light and viewer perspective change. Each painting is never the same from one moment to another. The artist states "that his paintings are physical responses to motion, that each is a frozen moment for those who wish to ponder the visual riddle I offer them." 76"H x 30"W.
