Alfred Augustus Glendening, Jr. (1861 - 1903/07) Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, measures 12 x 16 inches and 28 x 32 inches w/frame. Alfred Illman Glendening (b. 8th February 1861. Greenwich – d. 6th January 1907. Southend) (“AIG”) mostly was a genre painter. The son of Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) (“AAG”) by whom he was taught landscape painting, he later developed as a figurative artist working in both oils and watercolours. Between 1880 to 1905 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and elsewhere. Before moving to France in 1895 he painted theatrical scenery in London and New York. “Haymaking” was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895 and bought by the Chantry Bequest for the nation’s Tate Gallery. AIG’s paintings were very popular during the Victorian age, especially those depicting French markets or attractive girls. He painted several portraits and a commissioned portrait painted by him of Viscount Sydney hangs in Sydney Town Hall, Australia

Glendening Jr., Sohn des Landschaftsmalers Alfred Glendening Sr., erhielt seine ersten künstlerische Unterweisungen bei seinem Vater. Londýnský krajinář a žánrový malíř, syn malíře Alfreda Augusta Glendeninga staršího. Učil se u svého otce, pracoval především technikou olejomalby a akvarelu. Práce obou malířů se často vzájemně velmi podobají. Vystavovat začal roku 1864 v Královské společnosti britských umělců a řadu let pak vystavoval také na Královské akademii. Byl ve své době velmi populární. Později pracoval také jako malíř divadelních kulis, jako i mnoho jiných umělců viktoriánského období, aby si tak zajistil pravidelný příjem a určitou existenční jistotu pro svou vlastní tvorbu. Alfred Augustus Glendening Jr (England, 1861 - 1903) This Victorian landscape artist was born in London and began his adult life as a railway clerk. Not much information exists to explain when and where he received his artistic interest and training, but in 1864 he exhibited his first work at The Royal Society of British Artists, Morning on Grassmore Lake. From that point on, he became a frequent exhibitor at the Society, as well as the Royal Academy (RA) – exhibiting his first work there, A Cornfield – Kent, in 1865. Among his other important works were Summer Evening (RA -1867), The Thames at Hampton (RA – 1873), Sunbury (RA – 1877), Belugh on the Bure, Norfolk (RA – 1889) and In the Meadows, Youngsbury (RA – 1900) The English landscape was his specialty – depicting views of the Thames and scenes in Wales and Scotland. These works often featured small figures by the riverside or swans on the water. Light comes from outside the picture, filtering its way through a beautiful blue and white sky and casts soft shadows in the water. His landscapes are filled with subtle shades of color and the water often cuts across the canvas and vanishes around a turn in the background. Alfred Glendening continued to exhibit in London through 1903 – showing more than 130 works in all.
