      Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. 1897.

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924) SIZE: 21 5/8 x 32 7/8 in./55 x 83.5 cm PRINTER: Courier Litho., Buffalo, NY DESCRIPTION: This very early example of American posters—designed by this rarely seen female posterist—is a small but beautiful revolution. Boundaries are disrupted as the woman's pendant drapes over the lettering; dragonflies flit to the corners of their frames as if they're ready to fly off the page. The female figure, too, is almost precariously placed with a giant basket of flowers on her head—but she is serene and composed. "Only two posters are known by Glenny: one for the women's edition of the Buffalo Courier, another for the 1897 exhibition of the Buffalo Fine Art Academy and Society of Artists. Both are among the most beautifully printed American posters of the 1890s. These designs have the cool, classic frontality that could be perfectly at home in one of McKim, Mead, and White's classical-revival buildings or at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Glenny's drawing is firm and assured, and her feeling for color is unmatched. She trained as a painter in New York and Paris and specialized in murals" (Lauder, p. 187). (Art Nouveau; Exhibitions; American; New York)

    • ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924). BUFFALO FINE ARTS ACADEMY AND SOCIETY OF ARTISTS EXHIBITION. 1897. 32x21 inches, 83x54 cm.

ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924). BUFFALO FINE ARTS ACADEMY AND SOCIETY OF ARTISTS EXHIBITION. 1897. 32x21 inches, 83x54 cm.

      Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924) BUFFALO FINE ARTS ACADEMY AND SOCIETY OF ARTISTS EXHIBITION. 1897. 32 3/4x21 1/2 inches, 83 1/4x54 1/2 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, creases and minor staining in margins and image and along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; restored loss in central image. Trained in Paris and New York as a muralist, Alice Russell Glenny was also a sculptor and print maker. In this image, the rarer of only two posters she designed, Glenny revisits the same portrait of a woman she used in 1895 on her poster for the Women's Edition (Buffalo) Courier; she employs innovative design elements that are used to subtly break the border lines typically separating text and image. The pendant hanging from its owner's delicate neck extends boldly through the text and past the poster's inner border, a confine which is further disrupted by lively dragonflies, elevating the design to a much a higher lever than her earlier project.

ALICE RUSSEL GLENNY (1858-1924) WOMENS EDITION / (BUFFALO) COURIER. 1895. 27x19 3/4 inches, 68 1/2x50 1/4 cm. The Courier Litho Co, Buffalo, New York. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; restored losses, creases and overpainting in margins; minor creases in image. Trained in Paris and New York as a painter specializing in murals, Alice Russel Glenny designed only two posters (the other was for the Buffalo Fine Art Academy & Society of Artists). With a "firm and assured" hand, she produced a perfect archetypal Art Nouveau portrait of a woman that is less rigid than most of the American Art Nouveau images of the time. This explains the success that this image had in America and in Europe, where it was considered one of the best American posters. "The design has the cool, classical frontality that could be perfectly at home in one of McKim, Mead, and White's classical-revival buildings" (Kiehl p. 187). Maitres pl. 60, Etrangeres (with incorrect attribution), Kiehl p. 34, Margolin p. 182.
